Burglars Are Hard at Work
And Many Thefts Reported
An epidemic of thefts prevails In
the city. Burglaries to the extent
of seven or eight have been reported
to the police within the past two
nights and It is believed a gang of
professional thieve* and burglar* have
begun operations Although the po-
lice are reticent about giving out any
information regarding the particulars
or in lact giving out for publication
any theft burglary etc. it has been
learned from good authority that

out of a partnership formed by Swee-
ney and Ber.kendbrfer in which lue
latter signed a vendors' lien to secure
a debt on some machinery secured
from local machine shops. Sweeney
refused to sign the note and a suit
followed. Judgment was 'rendered
against Sweeney and he now appeals
to the upper court* claiming t.iat his
well drilling outfit is exempt from the
judgment rendered in the case.
Poll Tax Rush.
This being the last Jay to secure
a poll tax receipt to enable them to
vote at the next city election the
county collector's office was besieged
this morning with large crowds of vo-
ter* Who wi re anxious -to secure the
coveted slip which wimM grant them
tbt- right to have it voice In the ap-
irroacbing campaign. It is expected
that before the doors close tonight
that over 500 people wii) -have received
