OTICS TO THE PUBLIC:—Any er-
roneous reflection upon the charac-
ter standing or reputation of any
person flrm or corporation which
may appear In the columns of The
Dally Light will be gladly correct-
ed upon its being brought to the at-
tention of the management.
CANDIDATES VIEWS ARE ASKED.
It is almost sujterfluous to ask a can-
didate for legislature from Bexar coun-
ty his views on any legislation to be
brought forward at Austin for the
Clectioft of the candidates whose
nun - arc to be submitted to the pri-
maries In the July election seems to
be a foregone conclusion in at least
two cases out of three. But the jteople
are alive to what this election may
mean even if they have little voice
In it under the Terrell election law.
No candidate other than those an-
nounced can Come before the primaries
of the democratic party and only those
thus nominated in the primaries can
be voted for in the real election. This
law seems to have for Its object the
sidetracking of any candidate that
does not come through the democratic
wicket. True there is a little turn-
stile over which candidates without
a party following can climb into ’he
enclosure ana come on the track but
this fact Itself handicaps them in the
race for it advertises them as without
any party following. This is unfortu-
nate. for there are grave questions
some of which The Light has already-
called attention to that will be before
the next legislature and the views of
the candidates on these matters would
have been most instructive as afford-
ing the intelligent voter some guide
by which to cast his |>allot. There is
the law against pistol toting. How-
do the present candidates for legisla-
ture from this county range up on that
subject In the last legislature or.e
member ftom Bexar Hon T. D. Cobbs.
IM a splendid fight for both fine and
imprisonment as the penalty but he
was overruled and his efforts failed.
As he is again a candidate before th"
people there is some hope of that mat-
ter being revival. There is or will be
plenty of time after the primaries are
held and befhrc the meeting of the
legislature to instruct these gentlemen
who are to represent this county 1
the state legislature as to what Bexar
county requires of them. Th" Light
freely opens its columns to these can-
didates to put their views before th
people and also to the- people to put
their views as to needed legislation
before the candidates. Out of this
exchange of views should com a
knowledge of what the county really
desires and what the candidates ar?
willing to do.
Neither the corn nor the rice grow-
ers arc happy over the conditions of
the crop but the cotton seems to he
doing splendidly.
The anti-prohibitionists are down on
Colquitt for his attempt to suppress
his record as to prohibition votes pre
viously cast for him. l/‘t the contro-
versy die and the primaries settle it
It does not look now as If Colquitt
was in the running suffici. ntly to hurt.
While the seventeen >' .<r ol<j'loci st
is coming out of the ground by :he
millions in Kentucky according to the
latest reports from Glasgow. Ky. ther.»
is only here and there in Texas any
report of the boll wet vil sitting on
the division fences and del ating which
cotton patch they will tackle. Then
is not much th" matter with the agri-
cultural promise of this state this year.
The legal light who knows more
than the Supreme court of Illinois or
at least thinks that he does as evi-
denced in declaring that he coul I
change the action of that court In the
matter of a certain will the maker of
which had been declared by the court
of unsound mind has come to grief.
The motion to disbai him from pract|c e
is made and he is required to show
cause on the record why the same
should not be done. This is more and
worse than a mere case of contempt
and will be dealt with according to
the heinousness of it.
Bryan is said to be reticent while he
listens to all that is said in St. Peters-
burg. He is catching on.
WE MUST HAVE PURE MEAT.
The country is lees Interested. In
considering the point of difference be-
tween the committee bill on meat In-
spcctlon and that faxored by the presi-
dent than It Is in sei Ing that some
bill fully adequate to the occasion Is
I presented congress and passed by that
I body. The country also Inclines* to the
1 belief that the president known where-
of he affirms and thilt his experience
with the packers in their evasions of
j law has taught him that they w ill
j evade every law framed for their regn-
! latlon and government that is not safe-
guarded to the extreme limit. There
is no sensible man who believes that
I the conditions imported as existing In
' the investigated Chicago packery are
the inventions of the investigators or
that the repott made by other investi-
gators to the city council of Chicago
preverted the facts to such a degree
: as to totally discredit those reports
an I the charges founded upon them.
। The fact that the packers made haste
’to clean up and then Invite inspection
throwing oi»en their establishments to
all observers at all times renders the
charges of both federal and city au-
thorities more probable Even lh-n
there is not wanting evidence to show
that the cleaning process could not
remove all the accumulations ot
months on the floors where the film
had caked and become a part of the
flooring defying removal 1t Is useless
to make a grand stand play again'-t
the president either in or out of
gress. to discredit his charges and
render less effective the measures he
would put into action for the greater
security of the people in this an 1
other countries who consume the
meats of the packery. The demand tor
pute food cle-.m food wholesome ar. 1
fresh fruits unadulterated milk and
drugs and all that is in that line grows
insistent and the president has the
country with him in his efforts to se-
cure sucn sui plies allovcrthe count.-.
The opposition to his conrse is large-
ly a political one and with that pitas?
of it the people are not interested
bevond a dis;>osition to see that his
efforts are not negatived by the poll- |
ticians.
The house is on record at last as

that of a sea level canal but the sen

favor if it knew its own mind.
St. Petersburg workmen threaten to I

liament which is regarded as altogcth

‘Bryan is taking in the monarchies
of Europe while his lieutenants in Am
erica are taking all the old antagonists
of the Commoner in out of the wet.
Bryan is now in Russia with his eves
on St Petersburg which he has
now reached via Berlin. He will find
a new phase of life opening In that
autocrat!" country and may return
home with some more conservative
ideas as to the wisdom of letting the
antnstructed masses loose upon the
government.
There does not appear to have been
any real bottom to that revolution in
Guatemala and the participants in it
seem to have come to grief much
sooner than the average leioluti.rii
does in that sultry country. wh« r--
revolutions like earthquab s are alm- t
always on tap. The itch to join a
revolutionary army has struck evn
this city and enquiries are constantly i
made at The Light office for the re-
cruiting headquarters of the Gua‘<- '
mala revolutionists. While almost
everything is known in this office that
panic ilar thing was turned down.
This is the last day for entering the
race for offic" in Texas as candi laics
before th-- primaries. The legislative
candidates in this district are booked
tor a walk-over.
The home market club is a go >d
thing in any city. It is the greateit j
of ill factors in building up a home I
trade a trade in what is made and
giown a' home thus encouraging the
increase of all industries and addiagl
to the number of employed by both
of which the growth anti the prosperity
of the city are assured. The man who
makes his money in this city should
sp- nd it here even when doing so is
to his disadvantage as at times it
mav he to some small extent. The
reason is obvious. If the money made
here is not spent tyere. then the city
business must go down the toboggan
slidt as certainly as day follows night.
HOT TIMES IN RUSSIA.
Russian parliament has a stormy
scene as the result of the annouce-
ments of -he government that there
will be no intermission to the execu-
tions ordered or to lie ordered In the
Odessa and Riga districts and also
on account of the government demand
for the expulsion <4 Vlianoff from
parliament that the government might
proceed to his trial set for the 27
। .June for press offences. The demand
Ifor expulsion was immediately reject-
ed by parliamentary vote and the mil-

I itary procurator who presented the
demands of the government was hailed
as a murderer assassin dog. So great
was the confusion that the president
of the parliament had to threaten ad-
jmirnment before order was restored.
The action of the holy synod in refus-
ing to allow prayers for the repose of
the soul of Lieut Schmidt who was
shot for participating In the mutiny
a’ Seva *to vol. was referred to by
Father Akhantieff and this reference
brought the parliament to its feet
feet with another demonstration. That
the parliament is growing more radi-
cal and pessimistic under the en-
cioaehlng demands of the government
Is no longer doubted and even the
conservative president of the body la
growing more in sympathy with the
rrdicals. Jewish massacres continue
and about the only redress that the
complainants get is the assurance that
ail Is being dong to preserve ol der that
is possible. Even the Cossacks seem
inclined to side with the parliament
and assurances are received from
great numbers of the more influentill
that they will no longer serve as the
instruments of oppressing the people.
Russia is on the verge ot that revolu-
tion of the real masses of the nation
out of which alone any hope of better
things can come and that hope Is j
problematical for who can tell when i
the crucial moment comes if it will be
possible to control the spirit of haired
fostered through ages of oppression 1
and guide the awaki nod life of the
people into safe channels of control.
—
The politic.il situation is so far as 1
the county offices is concerned will
soon show increased activity but at
best tlie situation is a tame one.
This pr*mmv election business has
about taken all the vim out of the I
dictions increased the cost of select-
lug candidates and decreased th" op-
liortunity of really good men to place
themselves before the people with any i
show of a discriminate selection. The I
□Id convention had its abuses but I' [
was a chan handed ami a clear headed ।
method of selecting candidates to
before people compared with the
primary election law now in operation ;
in this state. But that law is on the |
statute book to be obeyed and the ’
remedy lies in making the best use
possible of it to return men to the
legislature who will abolish it.
The country Is not concerned to
what extent th" packers are damage I
by the governtm nt inspectors report
but they are interested in knowing l
to what ext -nt that charge as ba-sed
up >n the investigation is true. Th-
packers are certainly entitled to their
rights every time and so are the peo-
ple to clean packing plants and who.< ■
some meats. The investigation was
ordered to determine whether they are
getting these or aie getting it in the
neck.

Getting after the frauds is the order
In all the states and the illegal fencers

The National Nursery men nearly |

nurserymen will come here to hold [
their national session and San Antonio
by that time will have blooming orch-

Washington D. C. June 16.—The

miles off Destruction islands and. ac-
cording to Captain George
of the steamer Asuncion a Pacific oil
company's line sftamer It is not likely
that the crew will ever be heard from.
Capt. Brigett thinks the crew were
blown up in an explosion which caused
the tire. He said he went alongside
the Argus and at that time the vessel's
hull and house were burnd away. Thu
Argus was bound from Puget Sound
to San Francisco with a cargo of 750.-
poii feet of lumber.
She was owned by the Pacific Ship

Another point mentioned by Captain
Brigett which seems to Indicate that
the crew perished in an explosion. Is
that the lashings on the boat were not
touched.
