TWO MEN AGAINST THE TEXAS GIRL
TEXT BOOK
LAW DISLIKED
The school board held a meeting
last evening at which the text book
law now pending before the legisla-
ture at Austin came up for considera-
tion. It was the general opinion that
a text book law .was not favorable to
the larger cities or this state.
There has been much opposition in
the larger cities to the proposed law
which would make the same rules tor
the city schools and country schools.
San Antonio and other large cities ot
the state wish to be exempt from the
uniform text book law. The board is
of the opinion that the law would
work a great hardship upon the
schools of this city and would inter-
fere with the present studies.
A petition from the Carnegie library
asking for a room in one of the colored
schools for the establishment of a
branch library for negroes was re-
ferred to the architect for a report.
Permission was granted to the Fan-
nin school Mothers' club to place a
memorial tablet in the Fannin school
in honor of the hero after whom the
school is named.
The teachers Of the public schools
presented a petition to the board for
an increase in wages. The petition
was referred to the finance committee.
A communication was received from
an attorney representing the widow
of the late F. L. Sergeant presenting
a claim for damages for the death of
her husband. Sergeant fell from the
second story of the Marshall street
school last April the injuries resulting
in his death. The claim was referred
to C. H. Bertraund attorney for the
board.
The report of F. A. Chapa the treas-
ui>er of the board was presented and
ordered filed. The report shows the
board to be in a good financial condi-
tion.
The board adopted resolutions of re-
spect to the memory of the late Miss
Columbia Rossy and then adjourned
out cf respect to her. Miss Rossy had
been a teacher in the public schools
for many years.
HOMESEEKERS' EXCURSION.
It % Said That 2000 Came in on the

and east.

great many people. An estimate

MUST CLEAN
UP CELLARS
Fire Chief Wright will at once
commence a systematic inspection of
every basement and cellar in the bus-
portion of the city. He will de-
tail one or two members of the de-
partment to do this work. The pur-
pose is to prevent the accumulation of
inflammable material.
The fire chief says this is very nec-
essary in order to prevent fires from
gaining headway. In the Dubinski ear-
ly this morning the fire chief found
that the cellar was almost filled with
material that would Increase the pro-
gress of a fire.
Chief Wright says that if this in-
flammable rubbish can be prevented
from accumulating the number of
flre s and the loss by tires will dimin-
ish. There is a law against allowing
the accumulation of material likely to
cause a fire and this the fire chief pro-
poses to enforce to the letter.
The men to Inspect basements and
cellars will begin active operations to-
morrow. Places found with an unnec- I
essary accumulation will be served ■
wiht notices to do away with it
i Irritability
* " bad temper nervousness melancholy and other signs of disordered
H nerves are frequently caused simply by dyspepsia.
. ) Dyspepsia (chronic indigestion) upsets the whole system and
the victim becomes thin worn miserable and suffers from continual
58 pain and trouble of one kind or another.
The mere treatment of such a condition by pepsin etc. to help
■ digestion itself is not enough to bring about a permanent cure.
What is needed is a remedy that actually tones up the weak-
ened digestive organs and at the same time purifies the digestive
M canal from the poisons of undigested food.
Such a remedy is Thedford’s Black-Draught for over 70 years
