ASSESSORS ARE

REQUIRING CORRECT LIST OF

LEGALIZING PERJURY
No Man They Declare Will Render
Hi* Property for Taxation at it*
Market Value.
Special to The Light.
X Austin Tex. March 16. —Charles B.
' White tax assessor of Fannin county
was here today. He declared that
the assessors through the state are
very much opposed to the bill which
was passed in the senate and is now
pending in the house to require tax
payers to give under oath a correct
list of all their property and which
also provides that the assessor shall
make oath that such property owner
has rendered his property for its fair
cash values.
’ Mr. White characterizes such a law
as "legalizing perjury” as it makes
an assessor swear to something he
knows is not so as no man is going to
render his property for taxation at its
fair cash or market value.

FILES SUIT
FOR $165000
DAMAGES ASKED OF D. SULLIVAN
OVER BILL
& CO.—ALLEGATION IS THAT
Ermle Fant and D. R. Fant yester-
day afttrnoon filed suit for 1165000
damages against D. Sullivan & Co. of
this city.
Plaintiffs allege that they had ar-
ranged to buy 41847 acres of land situ-
ated in Hidalgo county for a consid-
eration of $60000 and that they made
an agreement with H. P. Drought &
Co. to furnish the money to carry the
transaction through. They also al-
lege that they had arranged to sell
this land at a profit of $65000 when
the defendants wrongfully told H. P.
Drought & Co. that they held a lien on
said land which would be superior to
any that the plaintiffs might give in
security for the 160000 which they
had agreed to lend; that H. P. Drought
& Co. not desiring to risk litigation
over the matter then refused to make
the loan. The 765000 profit lost by
breaking up the trade and $lOOOOO ex-
emplary damages are asked.
