NEW HOTEL TO COST
NEARLY $1000000
Only $150000 of Stock Still to be Subscribed
Plan Modern Up-to Date Hostelry 10 Stories
High Containing 500 Rooms
Promoters of the San Antonio Hotel
company report that a trifle more than
$250000 of the stock has been sub-
scribed and that little difficulty is an-
ticipated in disposing of the remain-
ing $150000 which it is desired to
sell before having the pliyis pre-
pared.
The company was originally organ-
ized with a capital stock of $200000
but later it was determined to in-
crease tils to $400000. The original
capital has. therefore been oversub-
scribed to the extent of $50000. When
the remaining $150000 is subscribed
giving a total capital of $400000 the
company will issue bonds to the ex-
tent of about $500000 to enable it to
erect a building the total cost of
which will be in the neighborhood of
one million dollars.
Hard Work by L. J. Hart and Others.
The new hotel scheme is the result
of tireless work on the part of
several of those whose names are
identified with the new company
prominent among which is L J. Hart
who has been selected as president
by the board of directors. The direc-
tors are as follows; jot Gunter Geo.
M. Maverick William Negley L. J.
Hart. E. R. Richardson Thos. F.
Brady. Lewis Maverick Victor Hugo
V. A. Petty.
Tte officers are; President L. J.
Hart; vice president George M. Mav-
erick: secretary Lewis Maverick;
treasurer. William Negley. All of
these gentlemen are San Antonians
and all the stock so far subscribed is
subscribed by San Antonians. Con-
trary to custom there has been no
promotion stock issued by which is
meant stock given to promoters for
their services in working up the or-
ganization.
The gentlemen who have taken the
lead in this movement have bei|i foi
several years endeavoring to interest
local people in a large hotel but were
unsuccessful in getting the amount
of money together that they deemed
necessary. Several months ago when
it wax evident that the time had come
when the money would be available
for the asking the gentlemen organ-
ized a syndicate and opened negotia-
tions for a lot at the corner of Na-
varro and Houston streets but were
forced to abandon this because of the
limbed room available. The next
pla*'e hit upon was the present site
of the Mahncke hotel known as the
Winslow property having 222 feet
frontage on Houston 338 frontage on
St. Mary’s and 168 feet frontage on
Travis for which $200000 was paid.
When a charter wag granted to the
San Antonio Hotel company the
property was turned over to it for ex-
actly the price paid notwithstanding
that a few days after the purchase
was made from Mrs. Winslow there
was an ”opportunlty to dispose of the
land at a profit of approximately

Want First Class Hotel.
If a hotel worth half a million were
desired It could be built now as there
"ould be no trouble in securing the
required funds by the issue of bonds
with tne amount already paid in but
ihis is not intended. The promoters
want a hotel that will be of the first
ciass for years to come. They believe
the business will be here to support
one of 500 rooms in the next two or
ihree years and they are going to se-
cure the proper amount of money to
put up a building of this size before
■i shovel-full of dirt is removed from
the foundation. The money is ex-
pected to be all in hand within thirty
or sixty days and until disposed of
anyone who desires stock can se-
cure it.
One of the gentlemen interested in
tais enterprise stated to a Light rep-
resentative that the rents from the
lower floors not utilized for hotel
purposes together with tne privileges
will bring an annual rental of $50000
which is 5 per cent on an Investment
ot one million. This guarantees in
tereat on the stock and bonds even
a period of depression should come
*nd render the hotel non-divldend pay-
ing for a time or whether the hotel
ieature ever became dividend-paying.
But no such contingency is expect-
ed. With every street car passing
'he door making every portion of the
citv accessible in a minimum of time
and the cars from every depot pass
ng the hotel it is believed that it will
begin paying dividends from the first
and that in a very short time the
stockholders will be receiving greater
dividends than is paid by any other
San Antonio corporation. That it
will be possible to iecure proper man-
agement is shown already by letters
eeine received from experienced ho-
tel men who are anxious to close a
contract at fancy figures.
Ten Storie* With 500 Rooms
There is no hotel in the city which
ax in excess of 200 rooms conse-
'iuently this with 500 rooms means
uuite an extension of hotel facilities
tor the city it will be easily one of
'he largest hostel l ies in the south. No
Plans have yet been drawn but offi-
cials of the company have decided
that it shall be ten stories with 500
looms: that it shall be set back from
jhe street to allow a sidewalk the full
lent: th of Houston street of about
twentv-fiv e feet in width with a wide
walk on the St. Mary’s street side;
• nat the building shall be beautiful
in architecture provided with every
device for the comfort safety and
convenience of guests; that it will
have the most beautiful palm garden
in the state; that rooms on the lower
floor not necessary for the hotel
proper shall be leased to a saloon
barber shop news stand cigar stand.
Pool room and for other business
usually patronized by guests of ho-
tels. and finally that it shall not cost
•ess than $BOOOOO.
It is calculated by the gentlemen
aterested in this enterprise that the
new hotel will not injure greatly the
busness of other hotels doing busi-
ness in the city but temporarily if at
all- It is their belief that more peo-
ple will come to San Antonio If proper
accommodations are provided and
t hat in the course of a very tew years
one or more additional hotels of sim-
ilar size will be required to meet the
reouirements of the Increasing num-
ber of tourists who are coming here
for health and pleasure. They be-
lieve that hotels will bring people
here the same as hotels have drawn
people to the different resorts in
Florida where by the way no one
ever went until after the hotels were
built.
M ithin much less than ten years
it is expected that the increase in
value ot the realty upon which the
Btualed "ill be more than
$500000. All things considered it is
believed the stockholders in the San
Antonio Hotel company have a good
tninp uhich will not only bring them
a splendid return upon their money
but will increase the value of real
< state throughout the business and
residence portions of the city.

BERT ANDREWS “LIGHTNING AD-

LITTLE HISTORY.
GROWTH IS GREAT
Former Exhibition Grounds Not Large
Enough Now for Even Cook Tent.
About Mr*. General Tom Thumb.
Bert Andrews known to the profes-
sion as the “lightning advance agent”
and now acting as an emissary for
Gentry Brothers’ Federated Shows
was in the city yesterday perfecting
the final arrangements for the exploi-
tation of the titanic equine canine and
elephantine exhibition in San Antonio
on March 22 and 23. Talking to a rep-
resentative of The Light 'ast night
Mr. Andrews said:
"The time-honored phrase 'bigger
better richer and grander than ever’
really fits the Gentry situation this
season. For twenty years the show
has been up to the times and a little
ahead but this season the manage-
ment has actually moved forward a
full score of years. The performance
is really a knock-out—a whirlwind cy-
clone and hurricane combined. This
explains why our tent area has been
incerased Exhibition grounds that
formerly held our entire spread ot
canvas are not big enough now to hold
our cook house and horse tents alone.
Unlike some managers the Gentrys
never crowd their tents so that the
spectators are uncomfortable. Visit-
ors to our show can always count on
courteous treatment.
“As a special stellar attraction we
have the original Mrs. General Tom
Thumb known as the Queen of Mid-
getland on both sides of the Atlantic
for more than a generation.
“Our elephants ponies dogs mon-
keys goats and sheep are doing stunts
this season that would have been con-
sidered ‘pipe dream’ talk a few years
ago .’Billy' Wells and 'Wink' Weaver
our chief trainers have worked won-
ders with their prodigies and have
put all the other animal trainers In
the country in the down and out class.
"Don't forget to look at our street
parade—it’s framed up to catch the
youngsters in a superlative degree”
concluded Mr. Andrews as he grab-
bed his grip and made a flying-wedge
movement in the direction of the I. &
G. N. depot.
NEW DEVICE
FOR RAILROAD
COMPANY IS ORGANIZED HERE TO
J. N. Sanchez of Galveston J. C.
Lampkin of Hallettsville and M. N.
Cure of this city are organizing a
company to build a factory in San An-
tonio for the manufacture of a new
railway device which is known as a
roller-bearing car wheel.
This invention is the result of ex-
periments covering a number of years
by Joseph N. Sanchez of Galveston
and has elicited many complimentary
remarks by his friends who have
watched his experiments so long. In
railway circles Texas is general and
the southern portion in particular is
becoming well known for its fertile
inventors.
In speaking of the new device yes-
terday to a reporter for The Light
Mr. Cure said:
“The Sanchez car wheel has a sta-
tionary axle and requires no grease
a few flakes of graphite in the ball-
bearing being sufficient to operate
smoothly for a long and continuous
period with no opportunity for “hot
boxes" which so frequently cause de-
lays. There is also no chance for a
wheel to burst as is sometimes the
case in soud wheel* when under hea-
vy pressure inasmuch as the weight
by an ingenious device is distributed
over a space occupied by six of the
ball bearings while in an ordinary car
wheel the entire weight centers at the
half-inch point where the wheel touch-
es the rail.
"The wheel is a little more expen-
sive to build but Its parts are inter-
changeable and so constructed that on-
ly a small portion wears out. and
these can be replaced in five minutes
at any point along the line and does
not require going into the shops as at
present.
“The main feature Is its ease of run-
ning and tested Reside the present
'greased' car wheel has assumed a
speed thrice as great without heating
any of its bearings and upon another
test a speed of 3000 revolutions was
attained by both wheels which were
then allowed to stop of their own ac-
cord. resulting in the ball-oearing
wheel running twice as long before
coming to a complete standstill.”
