PETTIBONE GOES
TO TRIAL AT BOISE
National Importance Attaches
to the Event Which Be-
gins Today.
INDICTED FOR MURDER.
Attorneys for State Are Getting
Additional Evidence Which
They Hope Will Convict.
—» —
Boise Idaho Sept 4. —The term of
court which opened here today will be
rendered of national importance by the
trial of George Pettibone who. with
Secretary Haywood and President Moy-
er of the« Western Federation of Min-
ers was indicted for the murder of ex-
Governor Steunenberg. Judge Wood
will attempt to clear the calendar as
far as possible before beginning the
Pettibone trial which has been set for
Tuesday October 1. Clarence Darrow
the Chicago attorney who successfully
defended William Haywood will be the
chief counsel for the defense Mr. Pet-
tibone having expressed himself in
Darrow's favor. E. R. Richardson the
Denver attorney it is said will not ap-
pear in the case.
The attorneys for the state are now
busily engaged in preparing additional
evidence in an effort to secure the con-
viction of Pettibone. Unprejudiced
| citizens of Boise believe that the evi-
dence against Pettibone is even
weaker than that produced against
Haywood and that the Denver mer-
chant is sure of acquittal. Senator Bo-
rah is quoted as saying that President
Moyer who is now at liberty on $25.-
000 bond will never be tried. Attor-
neys for the prosecution admit that
they have little evidence tending to
implicate Moyer in the murder of
Steunenberg. and that his trial would
entail a useless expense on the already
overburdened people. It is rumored
i that the Pettibone trial may have to
be postponed on account of a lack of
funds to follow up the prosecution.
; Other rumors are to the effect that the
; Mine Owners’ association has agreed
to furnish the money needed. If the
trial is put off Pettibone's attorneys
will demand bail for their client. All of
the $lOOOOO appropriated for prose-
cuting the federation leaders has been
expended and many voters are up in
arms against further great expense in
cases where Governor Gooding and
other state officials have failed to
make good their allegations. It is like-
ly that the matter will again become
an issue in Idaho's next election sev-
eral prospective candidates for state
offices having already announced
themselves as opposed to what they
term the "wasteful extravagance” of
the present administration.

fers Rich Reward.
Special to The Light.
Waco Tex. Sept. 4. —Within the
past week several letters have been
received by different parties here the
letters having been written from
Madrid Spain by a person who claims
to be a nobleman in jail for fraudulent
bankruptcy and imploring the parties
receiving the letters to come to his
aid and the aid of his daughter. The
name signed in each case is A. von
R and the address in Madrid is
given. The letter written in a beauti-
ful hand implores the one receiving it
to answer by cablegram if they can aid
the distressed nobleman and if so to
come at once to Spain. A cipher is
furnished in the letter indicating
‘‘yes'’ or "no" in the matter of coming.
It is stated in the letter that the no
bleman has in America a trunk with
850000 francs in it or about $170000
but the trunk cannot be had without
certain papers which might be termed
an order or bill of lading and these
papers are in the carriage of the no-
bleman which has been seized. The
nobleman offers 40 per cent to the one
coming to his aid and redeeming the
carriage where is hidden the bunch of
papers calling for the trunk.
This is a faku which has been work-
ed in this country before and doubt-
less such letters have been written to
nearly every city in America hoping
to catch a few suckers who will be
robbed on going to Madrid.

RINGLINGS CIRCUS
KINGS OF THE WORLD
Reported That They Absorbed
. Barnum and Bailey Hagen-
back and Others.
Chicago 111. Sept. 4. —Friends of
Ringling Brothers in this city assert
that a deal has been closed whereby
the Ringlings become owners of the
Barnum & Bailey show which also
controls the Buffalo Bill show. There
are also working arrangements with
Hagenback and Pawnee Bill so that
the deal if it is a reality gives the
Ringlings an absolute monopoly of the
big circus business. It has long been
the dream of John Ringling to be the
Circus king of the world and his ambi-
tion appears to have reached the pin-
nacle. No mention of the price is
made but the last estimate of the
Bailey show valued it at ' $5000000.
Three years ago. when Ringling and
Bailey saw that cut-throat competition
was injuring both shows they entered
into an ironclad agreement dividing
the territory and thus cutting half
their billing and advertising expenses.
The merger will open New York and
other cities to the Ringlings. hitherto
closed to them because of the agree-
ment.
