CHICAGO April I.—Carrying their
war of violence and threats into the
federal courts three Italians yester-
day followed Rev. F. Gideon King-
ley and his wife into Judge Landis'
court endeavoring to crowd them
into a corner and finally left after
whispering a threat into their ears.
The offense of the minister and
his wife against the "Black Hand" is
that they are acting as prosecuting
witnesses in an Italian “white elave"
case.
After being trailed about at night
threatened apd shown in various
ways that they have been marked by
the assassins they were given court
permits to carry revolvers with
which they now are prepared to de-
fend themselves.
"We have been followed night and
da" by the Italians who are trying to
prevent us from testifying ip this
case” said Mrs. Kingley after leav-
ing Judge Hindis’ court room. We
are living on a house boat in the riv-
er just now and that district has
been visited time and again by these
men-”

By a decision of the Missouri supreme
court fraternal beneficiary societies
are made Hable for the payment of
policies of members engaged at the
> time of death in occupations pro-
hibited by the by-laws of the society
where it is shown that dues were ac-
cepted from the insured. The court
in the decision yesterday held that
Mrs. Ida Mathews of Kansas City
Mo. who sued the the Modern Wood-
men of America was entitled to judg-
ment for $2OOO the amount of insur-
ance carried by her husband who be-
came a bartender an occupation in
the prohibited class after he joined
the society.

FAMOUS HOTELS CLOSE.
Hoffman and Gllsey Houses in Neu-
York Are Doomed.

NEW YORK April I.—Two of New
York city's famous hotels—The Hoff-
man house and the Gllsey house —will
close their doors immediately. At a
meeting of the creditors of the Hoff-
man house last night the Misses Cad-
dingan. sisters of the late proprietor
relinquished control and the hotel will
be closed next Monday midnight. The
corporation was adjudged bankrupt
last fall.
The Gllsey house will close the end
of the present week and is to be con-
verted to business purposes. Both
hotels in their day have had the
names of many men of national
prominence upon their registers. The
Hoffman house has been the virtual
headquarters of the democratic party
here since the passing of the Fifth
avenue hotel.

dow of the same age to throw up his

a second later a 38-caliber bullet
crashed into his brain. Herbert did
not know the gun was loaded.

200.000 p rsons will march in a silent
parade with draped banners through
the streets of New York next Wed-
nesday in memory of the" victims of
the Triangle Waist company fire if
present plans are carried out as out-
lined by representatives of more than
150 labor unions. Citizens are asked
by union leaders to decorate th< ir
houses with some sign of mourning.

200 NEW OFFICERS

WASHINGTON. D. C. April 1. —
The 200 additional officers granted
the army by the last session of con-
gress will be distributed among the
grades from first lieutenant to colonel
as follows:
Seventy-seven first lieutenants. 79
captains 27 majors nine lieutenant
colonels and eight colonels. The presi-
dent has just designated 200 line of
fleers now in detached service whose
positions in their commands are to
be filled. It is bu thus creating va-
cancies that the extra officers are ob-
tained. The vacancies are distributed
among the cavalry artillery and in-
fantry in proportion to the commis-
sioned strength of each branch.

quotation was made last night on the
gold dollar of the issue of ISC.3 at
the auction sale of old American
coins held in the rooms of the Chi-
cago Numismatic society. The new
price is $37.50 the former record
being $35 for that coin.
Other sales were as follows: Half
cent piece of 1795 $3.10; cent piece
of 1798 $2.20; half dime of 1801
$3.20; quarter dollar of 1796 $2.60;
silver dollar of 1794 $BO.

ARMY ADOPTS AUTOMATIC.
New Pistol Will Take Place of Re-
volver.

WASHINGTON D. C. April L—
The United States army has adopted
an automatic pistol as a service
weapon to supersede the revolver new
used by the army. Practically all of
the commissioned and non-commis-
sioned officers of the military estab-
lishment and the enlisted men of the
cavalry and field artillery will carry
the new arm each loading of which
will contain eight shi ts. The war de-
partment has been investigating this
subject for five years.

to be used in advertising Nashville.
This was the work of a single even-

ent. The campaign for funds will be

work accomplished last night sets the
record for the largest amount of
money ever raised by any city at one
time to be used in an advertising
campaign.

nounces that after several years of ne-
gotiations a parcels post convention
between the United States and Halta
has been concluded. By the ratifica-
tion of this treaty another country was
added to the forty to which parcels
up to eleven pounds In weight may be
sent by mall from the United States
at the rate of 12 cents a pound.

specie bank today settled the terms
for a loan of $5000000 to the Chi-
nese government. The issue price of

deficit of the railway board will be
paid to China Juno 1.

ciples. which was also adopted it was
asserted that "in every- part of the
country negroes are denied equal
rights and opportunities their per-

they are not protected in the enjoy-

The military tribunal which has been
sitting here for three days hearing the
cases cf political prisoners charged
with connection with the recent rebel-
lion yesterday condemned to death 22
of the accused men. The foreign con-
suls are protesting against the execu-
tion of the prisoners and the families
of the men are In despair.

The tug Three Friends from Knights
Key to St. Johns Bar spoke to the
schooner Wm. R. Winslow thirty
miles southeast of Cape Oanaveral
yesterday and received notilication
that the captain and crew of the
schooner Emma Knowlton which was
abandoned at sea ninety miles south-
east of St. Johns Bar. in a sinking
condition wore aboard. The crew
of the Knowlton was rescued from
an open boat at sea. The derelict re-
ported by steamers 140 miles due east
of the bar riding on its beam's ends
is evidently this abandoned schooner.

Bellefontaine. Ohio. April 1. —Isaac
Heistand of Sycamore sixty enjoyed
the novelty of riding on a steam rail-
- way for the first time this week. The
roads were so bad that he felt he
i could not walk to McCutchenville. The
trip is only six miles but Mr. Heistand
enjoyed it so muen ne has determined
to make a trip to several eastern
states.

FOR PEACE PACT
New York Club Is Scene of a
Gathering at Which Treaty
With England Is Endorsed

NEW YORK April I.—A meeting
which Its sponsors hope will result
in inauguration of a nation-wide
movement to arouse public sentiment
in favor of the ratification of the pro-
posed arbitration treaty between this
country and Great Britain was held
last night at the New York Press
club. It was attended by representa-
tives of peace societies and of com-
mercial financial religious and other
interests. Resolutions were adopted
endorsing President Taft’s peace
plans and providing for the appoint-
ment of a committee of three hun-
dred to further the movenjent.
The resolutions provide for a re-
quest to the mayor of every city and
the sheriff of every county in the
country to call “public meetings to
adopt resolutions sunporting the arbi-
tration plan. These resolutions are to
be forwarded to congress. It is in-
tended to fix a date for the public
meetings proposed identical with one
selected by the leaders of the peace
movement in England so that the
meetings in advocacy of the Anglo-1
American treaty here and in Great.
Britain shall be held simultaneously.

Kansas City Mo. April 1.-—The
Swedish Evangelical church of the
United States has sued Peter H. An-
derson a missionary sent to Nome
Alaska. In 1896 and "grubstaked” to
stake out three mince for the church.
The only mine that proved profitable
was one staked out by Anderson for
himself. The church has sued for a
quarter of a million dollars equity In
valuable Kansas property-bought with
the proceeds of the Anderson mine.
