TOE TROUBLE
Onychocryptosis is the somewhat cryptic medical name for a
very common problem: the ingrown toenail. When the side of the
toenail grows into the surrounding skin, it causes redness, swell-
ing, and a surprising amount of pain. Left untreated for even a
short time, the toe often becomes infected, making the pain even
worse. Treating an ingrown toenail requires removing the part of
the nail that has grown in. Because of the likelihood of infection,
this task is best left to the podiatrist. If a particular toenail seems
to keep causing problems, despite regular trimming, the podiatrist
may suggest permanent removal of part or all of the nail. This
is done under local anaesthesia, with very little pain and almost
no disability. Afterward, a thick layer of hardened skin grows in
place of the nail to protect the toe.
P.S. Do not stuff cotton under an ingrowing nail to try and force
it out. It doesn’t work and can cause a corn in the nail groove.
This condition is one that should be seen and treated by a professional. Home treat-
ment may very well make matters worse. Ingrown toenails, corns, calluses, fractures,
running and other sports injuries are only a few of the podiatric problems I deal with
