“Plastic Surgery
Today
by Stephen W. Collar, M.D.
American Society of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons
STRAIGHTER JAWLINES
One classic sign of aging is the appearance of a
groove between the chin and jaw, a dent which is
sometimes referred to in medical circles as the "genio-
mandibular" groove. To the average person, it is gen-
erally perceived as a heavy jowl, a double chin, and/or
drooping skin between the mouth and jaw. As patients i
turn to plastic surgery to correct this manifestation of
resorbed bone of the chin and jawbone, they may 1
elect to undergo facelifts to tighten skin around the
jawline and/or liposuction to remove fat under the chin
and jowls. However, in order to regain a straight, (
youthful line to the chin and jaw, it is sometimes ad-
visable to use implants that wrap around these bones (
on some face-lift patients. Once in place, such im-
plants provide a solid structure over which newly-
tightened skin may drape for a more youthful look.
P.S. Because chin/jaw implants lie under muscle
I and fat tissue, they are nearly impossible to detect.
When considering plastic surgery or when the need for
it arises, you should feel comfortable asking your surgeon
for any additional information you need. It is a big deci-
sion to make, and it is one that should be researched ful-
ly. This column has been presented in the interest of better
public awareness of the benefits and limitations of plastic
I surgery. My office is located at 11914 Astoria #555,
Memorial Southeast Professional Bldg., 484-9447. Of-
fice hours: Weekdays by appointment.

EYE CONTACT
Dr. George H. Steed
GIANT PAPILLARY
CONJUNCTIVITIS
Giant papillary conjunctivitis, also known as "GPC," or contact
lens conjunctivitis,” is an inflammation of the lining of the up-
per eyelid, often associated with protein buildup on soft contact
lenses, particularly extended wear lenses. The inner layer of eyelid
tissue takes on a “cobblestone” appearance with literally hun-
dreds of large-size bumps, or papillae. In contact lens wearers,
these papillae begin to act like suction cups, and pull the contact
lens up under the upper eyelid. This mechanical friction causes
the eyelids to secrete more mucous and protein that will build
up on the contact lens, which then causes even more inflamma-
tion. This cycle usually continues until the lens can no longer be
tolerated. The condition can be difficult to resolve, often resulting
in a need to discontinue contact lens wear.
One effective preventive measure for “GPC” in contact lens
wearers is the use of disposable lenses. Quite simply, a lens is
disposed of before protein has an opportunity to start the reac-
tion cycle.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A MEDICAL HISTORY
It does not occur to most women to inform their dentists that
they take oral contraceptives. However, this information should
be part of a complete medical history for the dentist’s files. In
fact, the dentist should be apprised of all the drugs that a pa-
tient is taking, so that any potential drug-interaction problems can
be averted. In the case of oral contraceptives, these drugs lose
their effectiveness when coupled with antibiotics. Dentists often
prescribe antibiotics for tooth extractions, certain types of gum
disease, and other dental problems. A dentist who is unaware
that the patient is taking the Pill may unwittingly disrupt her pro-
tection from pregnancy by prescribing an antibiotic. The dentist
should be made aware of all prescriptions and over-the-counter
drugs that a patient is taking.
We are proud to be a part of your overall health care team. Your team

assure and inform each patient as to what will be done and listen to the
patient’s concerns. We are located at 11339 Hughes Road at South Belt,
