Twenty-six (26) teachers
from school districts in
Fayette, Gonzales, and Lava-
ca Counties will be awarded
the master of education
degree on May 7 They are
members of a pilot project
which was started at Flatonia
during the summer of 1970 in
conjunction with the Cycle V
Teacher Corps Program.
Since that time, the Flatonia
Project has grown into the
“School Without Walls" pro-
gram and has 6 centers in this
area The three graduate
centers are located in Flato-
nia, Schulenburg, and Yoa-
kum with the three undergra-
duate programs being conduc-
ted in Smithville, Moulton,
and Cuero. Total membership
for the 6 centers exceeds 175
students, of which 195 are
public school teachers
The degree granting institu-
tion is Prairie View A&M
College, a member of the A&M
College System Prairie View
College administration and
local school administrators
are working to meet the needs
of the academically isolated
rural school teacher who
desires to continue his profes-
sional development but finds it
difficult to do so because of
finances or job committments
in the area
The “School Without Wall"
Program is slated to be
expanded next ′ September in
this area, in communities
where the need exists. Plans
are being formulated to
expand the undergraduate
program this summer to allow
high school graduates an
opportunity to acquire college
credit in freshmen English,
history, mathematics and
other basic first year subjects
while living at home
