FAYETTE RANKS HIGH IN
LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION
"The Panhandle contri-
buted more than 70 percent
of the Texas cattle and calf
production in 1972,” Agricul-
tural Commissioner John C.
White reports.
Texas has more than twice
as many cattle and calves
and three times more beef
cows than the second place
state.
The cattle and calf popula-.
tion for Texas as of January
1 this year totaled 15,350,000
head. "Our human popula-
tion and the cattle and calf
population for Texas in years
past has pretty well been
about equal. But this past
year, our cattle population
showed a huge increase,
about 2,500,000 over 1972,”
White said.
Beef cows numbered 6,320,-
000 in Texas contrasted to
2,283,000 head of second-
place Oklahoma.
Texas is also first in the
nation in cattle on feed Last
year, about 4,300,000 head of
cattle were fed out in Texas;
this year, it’s expected the
figure will top 4,500,000 head.
The state ranks ninth in
the nation in milk cow
numbers with a total of

Marijuana Plants, Seeds,
Shotgun Netted in Search
SMITHVILLE - Combined
efforts of the Smithville
Police Department, the
County Sheriff’s office, and
D.P.S. Narcotics Division
last Thursday night nipped in
the bud an apparent attempt
by a local resident to
establish a marijuana nur-
sery within the city limits of
Smithville.
Armed with a search
warrant obtained at 9 P M.,

boxes full of marijuana
seeds, a heat lamp, cigarette
papers, a pipe, a straight
razor, a .38 pistol, and a
sawed-off shotgun
Several small pots had
been planted and the seed
lings sprouted, but most of
the smaller plants had failed
to thrive The two half-grown
plants were found just
outside the back door of the
residence Neither plant had
reached the seedpod stage
One arrest was made as a
result of the search and
seizure Acting Police Chief
C. L Taylor asked that the
name of the person arrested
and the location of the
discovery be withheld pend
ing further investigation by
U.S Treasury Department
ATF. It is hoped that more
arrests will be made as a
result of further investiga-

The only area of livestock
production in which Texas is
not in the top 10 is in swine.
Texas is 14th in total
numbers of swine, the same
spot it held in 1972. "But I
believe we are going to see
Texas soon in the top 10
states in hog production,”
White said.
The past two years, Fay-
ette County has been in the
top 10 counties in hog
production in Texas.
However, Fayette decreas-
ed its 71 production total of
29,200 hogs to 28.600 in 1972.
