parents, too, to find out their kid has a
hearing impairment," he said Many
of the children are also first-borns, so
a lot of the problems parents have are
normal child-rearing difficulties, he
said.
It is important to include parents in
the program, Ryan said, because
they, and not the teacher, are with the
babies during most of the day.
The program is only half-time
presently, although Ryan said DISD is
trying to expand it.
How far each baby progresses
depends on how much hearing loss
there is and when the child enrolled in
the program, as well as other factors,
Ryan said. But one child can already
say many words upon recognizing
what they represent, including cup,
cracker, ball and bye-bye.

tomorrow that will no longer be the

The shah came to New York from
his exile in Mexico on Oct. 22, and
gallbladder surgery confirmed the
presence of cancer in his lymph
system Miss Walters said he told her
that his wife, Empress Farah, his
doctors and other advisers insisted
that he come.
Miss Walters quoted the shah as
saying, "I did not want to come here"
and as saying he had to come for a
sophisticated diagnosing instrument
called the body scanner.
Although he has remained current
by watching television, Pahlavi did
not discuss the takeover of the U.S.

The Iranians have demanded that the

Asked during the interview whether

the shah answered, “Going back to

“Occupation No. 2" has been planned to be much
like the first occupation of the plant in June — non-
violent. One main difference will be the number of
participants
Whereas in June 48 protesters were arrested for
scaling a 4-foot fence which surrounds the plant, as
many as 100 expect to be arrested this time.
Curtis Copeland, who has been working to
organize the occupiers, said a ramp and ladder will
be used to avoid damaging the fence. Once inside,
the occupiers will set up alternate energy devices,
such as solar stoves, Copeland said. Upon their
arrest, which should come within 10 minutes of
occupation, the solar devices will be removed and
the group will leave peacefully with the sheriff's
men, Copeland said.
“We plan to cooperate — we will walk, we won't
damage the plant or dig holes or chain ourselves to
the fence,” Copeland said
After the actual occupation, a public witness
service will be held at 11:45 a m on the city square
in Glen Rose The service will be conducted by
ministers who have volunteered to support the anti-
nuclear group. Immediately after the service,
alternative energy displays and information will be
set up on the courthouse grounds

in order to participate in the occupation, must first

A group of protesters plans to be arrested this
weekend
They plan to trespass Sunday at 10 a.m. at the
Comanche Peak nuclear plant under construction
near Glen Rose.
The protesters, including about 30 from Denton,
think this is the most effective way to stop nuclear
power and the dangers they feel it holds for future
generations
The objective of these members of the Chaparral
branch of the Comanche Peak Life Force is to get
booked for trespassing, stand trial for their civil
disobedience and thus spread the word about their
beliefs
"Those committed to non-violent direct action
realize that the sheriff's deputies, the workers and
the nuclear engineers we may meet at the gates of
the plant are just as threatened by nuclear power as
we are. Non-violence is an open and honest attempt
to appeal to the conscience of others, showing un-
derstanding of their situations while trying to
communicate and educate the truth about the
nuclear threat," says literature prepared by the
Comanche Peak Life Force
* The Denton organization will be joined at the
Comanche Peak nuclear plant, which is under
construction in Glen Rose, by seven other similar
groups, each with 15 to 40 members, from Garland,
79 year-old soldier-statesman Earl
Mountbatten of Burma, the most
prominent Briton to be slain by Irish
terrorists in this century. He was
blown up in his boat.
Detectives said they are still
hunting for at least five other men
involved in the killing
The Mountbatten assassination
was the most sensational attack
staged by the IRA and has led to a
major tightening of security in
Ireland as well as increased
cooperation between the British and
Irish governments to curb the
guerrillas
The IRA, an almost exclusively
Roman Catholic movement, is
fighting to end British rule in largely
Protestant Northern Ireland and to
reunite it with the overwhelmingly
Catholic Republic Ireland was
partitioned in 1922.

complete a non-violent training course The training
sessions are four to seven hours long, and include as
topics the history of the life force and of non-
violence; listening exercises and oral com- ,
munication; non-violent response to personal
violence; police tactics; arrests and being in jail;
charges which could be brought against par-
ticipants; facts about nuclear power; and role play.
"We want to become a well-trained, organized,
community-based group," Jon Whitsell told par-
ticipants in the final training session before the
occupation. “The outcome should be your personal
involvement and statement, as well as a group
statement."
"We will be reaching out to more people through
press coverage We will reach the law enforcement
officers on their own turf. We will reach the town-
speople (who will serve) as jurors," Whitsell said
He pointed out to the trainees that not everyone
will actually occupy the plant — many will be
needed to serve as support group members, who
will see to first aid, meals and babysitting.
Copeland said many of the 48 who were arrested
at the first occupation will participate again Sun-
day. The entire group was tried for criminal
trespassing (a class C misdemeanor). The three,
day trial was declared a mistrial because of a hung
jury, and the 48 are now being tried individually
The first of the 48 individual trials began Tuesday in

Reza Pahlavi, the deposed shah of
Iran, says he has completed radiation
treatments for cancer and hopes to
leave here for Mexico within two
weeks, according to ABC News
In an interview Thursday with the
network's Barbara Walters, the
former Iranian leader said he was
“very anxious to leave” the United
States and, in fact, never wanted to
make the trip in the first place
Miss Walters quoted the shah as
saying he needs "semi-surgery” to
remove another gallstone, a
procedure which will involve insertion
of a small basket-like device into a
bladder tube to trap the stone and pull
it out.
“The shah doesn't know exactly
when the surgery will begin." Miss
Walters said “It depends how he
reacts to the radiation. But he's very
anxious to go, and hopes it will be
within two weeks."
The shah's surgeon, Dr Bjorn
Thorbjarnarson, reached at his home
Thursday night, said he could not
comment on the report. Other doctors
attending the shah have said privately
they would not oppose his leaving once
