Cot io.< is likely to reach twelve cents in Janu-
ary. but Burleson county will not have any cotton
then. As ioog as the price ranges above ten most
of the cotton will be «old as quickly as it can be
hauled from the gtn. and no chances taken on
weather damage, insurance, storage, inte-est. etc.
Just by way of parenthesis, if you happen to
be a vear or two bfh.nd on your paper, why n t
come in and move your figures up a year in ad-
vance' You can afford it right now and it w ¡II be
♦ofl your hands for a year. You have not been
annoyed with bills during the dull season, isn't it
fair that you come in and settle uj- now*
Ti'Xas ia to be congratulated on having kept
the fever out of the atate thi year, and it ia to be
hoped that no scattering cases wll get over the
border before froat comes. While there ha* been
a great deal of inconvenience to travelera, yet
this is insignificant in comparison with what ha
been avoided by keeping the fever out. It haa at
leaat been fully demonstrated that freight ia no
source of infection, aa freight and merchandise of
all kind* baa been moving freelv from the in-
fected districts at all times. Thi* cuts out the
worst bugaboo of the fever epidemic, and it is
likely that in a few more years yellow fever will
receive very little attention at the hanus of tbe
reading public, aa it ha* been shown that it can
be controlled if not immediutelv stamped out.
Thi: dust in Caldwell every Satu-day is doing
more damage than it would cost to sprinkle a
whole month. Jtist take a look at votir goods and
store on Monday morning, and see if it would
not be cheaper for you to pay your part of the
sprinkling espeses. We must have a sprinkler
and tbe sooner we get together and put in one.
the sooner we will be rid of the nuisance and the
damage. Every man who trade* in Caldwell it,
interested in this proposition, .ind many farmers
remark on the streets everv bu>v day the abso-
lute necessity of keeping this dust d->wn. Let
us v.ret to w.vrk the prop" '', or mv and I'.iu-
done with :t for all time.
Th sheriff of Bell county seem- to be rather
a strenuous officer himself, and making the
way of the transgressor in Bell county very hard
indeed. He eats up all kinds of " o;nts" without
salt. and "counts that day lost, whose low de-
scending sun" sees not some offender behind the
bars or some joint raided. Sheriffs like this are
hard to find, and the people ol Bel! county should
see to it tha he is kept just where he is. Let
him enforce the laws, and then if the laws do not
suit the people let thorn have them repealed.
Laws are made to be enforced, and an . fficer
who fearlessly enforces them is the right man
in the right place.
Aku all. the Houston Post and Waco Times-
Herald are bounu to admit that under the
great smoke the Dallas News Las been
raising there has been found a little fire. The
News has been too broad and sweeping in its
statement*, but at the same time its work will be
productive of great good. If there are any ras-
cals in the state offices thev stand a good chance
of being turned out, and in the future those with
an inclination for crookedness will look a "leedie
out", and altogether a campaign in the state
against tbe graft epidemic, which is surely spread-
ing to every state in the union, wll he'o to keep
our house clean.

PRE5S COMMENTS.
Cv m\kij has received several hundred bales
of cotton more on this date than or. the same date
last year, as will be seen by a glance at the table
of receipt^, hut this is not taken to mean that tbe
crop s larger than last vear. but that it is com-
ing n faster, and that it will a'.! be in a very
short time now. It is being estimated that tbe
Caldn '! receipts will 'all about a thousand í ales
short of l?.st season when it is all in.
Thi members of the Centra: Texas Press As-
ükk ..ittoo will n >te with regret that tbe Hor«e
Sh -w at Waco has been indeftniteiy postponed, as
tbe nv.\t mceúng was to úa-e been held in Waco
at the time of the Show. However, it s the reg-
ular date for the roeet ng. and it will be a profita-
ble one. r.sd every roeml-er should make bis ar-
rangements to be on band. The Waco people can
be depended on to do tbe r.ght thing at all times.
Lvsj we forget, that canning factory proposi-
tion has not vet bad attention. A small cann ng
factory will give s a regalar income all during

Ta: seems to l>e a slump in the market on

enough to make one wish that cotton had opened
