It ia worth remembering that ¡a addition to
voting in the primary elections this vear it ie
equally an important that the democratic votere
should attend and participate in the convention,
beginning with the precinct convention. It may
develope that the governor'a race will, after all,
be decided in the convention, and it ie eaaential
that the right kind of delegatea be chonen to go
to the convention. Speaking of the feature of |he
campaign the Galveston Newa aaya in a recent
editorial:
"Unleaa some one candidate ahall, through the
primariee, get a clear majority of all the conven*
tion votee instructed for him, then the reoult will
be determined by the action bad in the precinct
conventiona, and at thie writing it looks as though
the real fight would be in such conventiona and
not in the primary election at all, and that the
real content will be over the selection of dele*
gatea and not over the polling of individual votes.
"In the abaence of any instructions other than
the primary vote, delegat instructed for tail-end
candidates will cut a wide awath in the state
convention, and it is obvious that the tail end
candidates will have little, if any, delegate repre-
sentation. It ia even possible that a candidate
may have a goodly bunch of instructed votes,
without a aingle delegate to place hie name be-
fore the convention.
"It ia not necessary, however, for the democrats
of a county to leave their delegation free to flirt
around at will with that portion of tbe county's
vote which ahall become released from tbe pri*
mary instruction. They can, through their pre-
cinct and county conventions, inatrnct their dele*
gatea how to place theae votes, and they can pre*
ucribe the unit rule if they desire. For instance,
they may inatruct their delegates to cast 'for
Mr. A., aa loog aa his name is before tbe conven-
tion, all of the votea of B. county which they are
not required by tbe primary instructions and tbe
law to cast for other candida tea.'
"In short, presupposing tbe failure of any can-
didate to receive a majority of convention votes
through the primariee, tbe way is wide open for
tbe selection of tbe nominee through tbe old con*
vention system.. There are, however, two cscep*
tiooa from tbe old order of things. The firat ia
that the precinct conventiona must be held on tbe
name day throughout the state; and tbe second
ia that which is named at tbe outset, that many
voters believing tbe primary election to be the
Evbkv state in tbe union that is holding party whole thing, are prone to remain away from tbe
conventions ia enthusiastically endorsing Wm. J. ¡ precinct conventions, permitting a handful of
