Dr. David A. MacLennan tells a story about an experi-
ence he. had as a young man. One day while driving past a
church in his, home town, he chanced to notice the sermon
‘ title for the next Sunday as‘announced by the minister. The
title was, “O.D.T.A.A.” Upon’ arriving home, Mr. MacLen-
nan could not purge from his mind this collection of letters,
- O.D.T.A. A.”; therefore, he called the office of the church
Thad Pit Dnssitcdn—the to learn of their meaning. The secretary who answered the
telephone advised their meaning was simply, “One Damned
Thjhg After Another.", and the text for the sermon was,

6- Life is exactly that for many people, just one thing after-
“ another happens that causes them to feel that everything is
against them. A question often asked ministers and others
- involved in work in the ‘helping’ professions is, ‘How can I
bear up under my load?'The answer is much simplier than
one might "imagine. First of all, if we are to avoid feeling
that life is against us, we should acknowledge that much of
life is one-problem-after another. , • .
' Recognition of the problem is only the first step. We must
then realize that there are both positive and negative aspects
to be found in any situation. The quality of life we enjoy does
not depend solely upon our- ability to ignore the negative and
utilize the positive; ft depends also upon our ability tc learn -
from the negative situations.
