1 Mrs. Doris Meyers and
I Bonnie Lyerly, Home Man-
agement Specialists from
i Texas Agricultural Exten-
- Sion Service, Texas A&M
University, conducted a train-
ing meeting concerning Man-
agement. The training was gi-
I * ven to County Home Demon-
/ stratlon Agents from District
* 11, in regards to Pollution,
j At the training, phosphates
In detergents were discussed.
"The Department ofthe Inter-
ior’s Federal Water Quality
Administration has concluded
a series of laboratory tests to
determine the percentage of
phosphates used in a manner of
• common brand name deter-
gents.” .
David D. Dominick, Comm-
issioner of the FWQA said,
“These tests were undertak-
en by our agency because of
the conflicting results that
have been produced as to the
phosphate content in deter-
gents. We wanted to determine
.for ourselves why these incon-
sistencies existed and to pro-
vide the public with informa-
tion on the subject.”
Phosphorus, which is found
in detergents, sewage, ferti-
lizers, and industrial wastes,
is a pollution problem because
it speeds the growth of aquatic
vegetation which causes oxy-
gen deficiencies and greatly
accelerates the natural aging
process of lakes.
The test results are as fol-
lows:
