CUBS’ BALL CONTROL PAYS OFF
It doesn’t take a mathematician to figure out that a football
team can’t score very much without the pigskin. And therein
lies one of the big reasons for the Brenham Cubs' perfect
record through seven games. They just haven’t let the other
team have the ball too often.
In racking up their 7-0 mark, the Cubs have run 440
offensive plays while allowing their opponents just 332 times
to have a crack at their goalline. That's an average of 15.4
more times per game the Cubs have gotten a chance at
- crossing their foes' double-stripe.
Brenham’s crunching offensive machine has taken
advantage of this edge to score 145 points, and its awesome
defense, which of course has been a major factor, is allowing
an average of less than five points per opponent, or a total of
just 34. "
Only one team, Dallas Jesuit, ran off more plays (not -
counting punts) than have the Cubs. In the opening contest
here, the Rangers unreeled 49 plays from scrimmage while
Brenham had 46. However, the Cubs outgained them, 160 to

that game the Cubs gained 234 yards and the rough Tigers

them, 267 to 94, in total yards and the defense came through
with its second straight shutout.
Never was ball control such an obvious factor as it was
against the Hornets, who were exceptionally fired up and
have two great running backs, the kind you like to keep the
ball away from And Brenham did just that to come from
behind three times and win it. The Cubs' offense maintained
its largest margin of the season (74-44) against Huntsville to
gouge out their 29-15 victory, during which they rushed for
315 yards, a season-high.
