The potato crop of the Galveston and
Houston district will be 40 per cent
smaller than usual.
Plans are being formed for the erec-
tion of a home for working girls at
Houston.
Cameron and Hidalgo counties ap-
pealed to the state health officer for
help in dealing with an epidemic of
small pox. The state officer replied
that the counties could cope with the
situation and directed them to do so.
Brownsville cabbage, shipments to-
tal 654 cars. The cabbage season is
about at an end, and watermelons are
now being shipped. The first carload
shipped retailed in Dallas at a dollar
each.
Port Arthur expects to secure a
big Methodist college with an appro-
priation of $200,000.
A painter at work on a flag staff at
Galveston 80 feet above the sidewalk
saved his life when the rope parted by
grasping the staff and clinging on till
assistance was rendered.
Indictments were returned against
prominent Illinois Democrats for con-
spiracy to bribe in the election of Sen-
ator Holtzlaw to the U. S. senate, even
while that gentleman was vehemently
proclaiming his innocence in a speech
before his colleagues and demanding
a senatorial investigation. A state
senator who received $2500 to vote
for Holtzlaw confessed and told his
story to the grand jury.
Kansas will need 20,000 extra har-
vest hands this year. This is about
2,000 more than was needed last year.
Hundreds of books and records be-
longing to the Illinois Central railroad
have been seized by the United States
government at Chicago, following
charges of discrimination in tariffs
made by commission men of Chicago.
Because Mrs. 'Margaret Allis, found-
| er of the Allis-Chalmers company, for-
I got to append three ciphers to the be-
I quests to her four grandchildren, they
will have to be satisfied with 125 each
insteatd of $25,000 which she intended
-’ to leave them.
Heads of the steel and Iron Industry
in the United States are considering
a movement toward a six-day week
for all employes. Most of the work-
men in the steel mills now work seven
days each week.

MONDAY, MAY 10.
Candidates for state and legislative
offices have one week more in which
to file their names for places on the
tickets.
The state banking department ex-
pects the number of state banks to
reach 600 within the next month.
Walls of masonry ten feet thick and
with- iron doors were unearthed be-"
neath a street in the City of Mexico.
They are supposed to be the remains
of a San Franciscan monastery.
At Sulphur, Okla., H. L. Nelson shot
and killed Mrs. Anna East, in a hotel
at which the woman was a guest, and
committed suicide, and at Ft. Worth
John Welch, colored, just to keep up
with the white folks, shot his wife and
drank carbolic acid.
While returning from their daugh-
ter's funeral, Samuel Barr and wife
were run into and killed by an express
train.
Capt. Lyon, who commanded the ne-
gro troops at the time of the Browns-
ville outrage, will be courtmartialed
because he told too many inconsistent
and conflicting stories about that inci-
dent.
While fixing the target at the Mon-
terey army practice grounds, a sol-
dier was riddled with bullets by his
comrades. His presence was not to
them known, and when the morning
practice began, the first ball wounded
the luckless man who was compelled
to lie exposed to the rain of bullets
which fell upon him for several hours.
A St. Paul-business man was hus-
tled to another city to get him away
from a mob which wanted to lynch
him for killink his wife .and a Catholic
priest whom he accused of illicit re-
lations.
The federal grand jury at Chicago
has returned indictments against E. A.
Starkloff and others who are under ar-
rest. charging them with conspiracy
and using the U. S. mails to defraud.
It is alleged that they mailed letters
proposing to furnish each addressee
with enough undetectable spurious U.
S. $1., $2 and $5 bills to make the for-
tune of the purchaser.
Curtiss, the American aeronaut, flew
from Albany to New York, 137 miles,
in 1 hour and 32 minutes, breaking
the world's long distance speed rec-
ord and Incidentally winning a cash-
prize of $10,000 offered by the World
for the first man to make the flight. I
His average speed was 54 miles an 1
hour, outspeeding a special train car-
rying his wife and newspaper men.
The government cotton report Is ex-
ported to show an increase in acreage.
TUESDAY, MAY 31.
Augustus Richard, Jr., a Houston
baker, was caught by the arms in the
cogs of a bread mixing machine and
as he was slowly drawn into the ma-
chine, he died of fright. His arms
were mashed to a pulp to near the el-
bows before the machinery was stop-
ped. and the Heung man was dead be-
fore anyone could reach him.
The railroad commission refused an
increase of other freight rates to off-
set the reduction in the rate on cotton.
Lieut. Foulois remained in the air
in the government’s biplane an hour
and a halt at Ft. Sam Houston.
The explosion of a gasoline stove
in a tailorshopat Bronte started a fire
that destroyed $50,000 worth of prop-
erty.
A new gusher at Sour Lake will re-
sult in the opening of a new oil field.
Alma Kellner's body was found in
Louisville, Ky„» beneath a church
where it was thrown a year ago by
unknown murderers. The little girl
mysteriously disappeared at that time
and the fact was one of the sensations
of the day.
At Alexandria, La., 8. E. Ford, a
young bookkeeper, was shot and killed
by Miss Carrie Pritchard.
Senator Bailey will lead the fight
against the conference report on the
rivers and harbors bill, which elimi-
nates the Beaumont-Orange project.
A speech by Senator Bailey in the
senate resulted in the defeat of an
amendment to the railroad bill provid-
ing that one railroad shall not pur-
chase the stock of a competing line.
This practice is already forbidden by
state laws. .
Glenn Cogan was killed at Aransas
Pass, his head being crushed in the
cogs of a dredging machine.
It was announced at Texas City that
the Texas Sugar Refining Co. of Dela-
ware will shortly erect a large sugar
refinery at that place. -

was assassinated at Marshall, his mur-

Whereas, on the 5th day of May,
A. D., 1910, a petition was filed in the
Commissioners’ Court of Matagorda
County, Texas, praying for an election
in Election Precinct No. Nine (9) of
Matagorda County, Texas,- to deter-
mine whether hogs, sheep and goats
shall be permitted to run at large
within the limits of said precinct.
AND WHEREAS., the Commission-
ers' Court of Matagorda County, Texas,
did on May 9th, 1910, at a regular
term of said court, in accordance with
the prayer of said Petition order an
election to be held in said Precinct on
June 19th, 1910, to determine whether
hogs, sheep and goats shall be permit-
ted to run at large within the limits
of said Precinct;
Now THEREFORE, I. w. 8. Hol-
man. County Judge of Matagorda Coun-
ty, Texas, do hereby .order that an
election shall be held on the 18th day
of June, A. D., 1910, to dete mine
whether hogs, sheep and goats shall
be permitted to run at large within the
limits of Election Precinct No. Nine,
at Markham, Matagorda County, Texas,
said preeinet being as establish-
edby the “Commissioners' Court"
of Matagorda County, Texas, • ■
August 13th, 1903, by order of that
date duly recorded in Vol. "E" page
281 of the Minutes of said Court, and
as shown by the map of Matagorda
County, made by P. Whitty of Houston,
Texas, and bounded as follows:
Beginning at West side of Colorado
river, where Matagorda and Wharton
County line crosses said river; thence
following the said County line
West to the N W. corner of Survey
No. 19 made for !. AO N. R. R. Co.;
thence South on the West line of said
Survey, to the North line of W. A. Hurd
League; thence West to the N. W. cor-
ner of said Hurd League;
Thence following the West line of
said Hurd League to the 8. W. corner
of same.
Thence East to the East line of Sur-
vey No. 58 (script number) made for
I. A O. N. R. R. Co.
Thence South along the East line of
Surveys Nos. 58 and 63 (script num-
ber) made for I. A G. N. R. R. Co. to
the N. E. corner of the H. Parker Matagorda for at least (30) days be-
League as shown by, map made .by fore the day of election, and due re-
turn made thereof on or before the
P. Whitty; thence 8. to the 8. E. cor-
ner of said Parker League.

of beginning, as established by order
of the Commissioners’ Court on the
13th day of August, 1903, and recorded
in Minutes of Cimmissioners' Court in
Vol. "E" on page 281 thereof. •
H. Rader, a tree-holder and qualified
voter in said Precinct is hereby ap-
pointed Presiding Judge of said Elec-
tion, and R.' Robertson and C. V. Cab-
anis tree-holder and qualified voters
in said Precinct are hereby appointed
as Judges to assist him in holding the
same, and said judges are authorised
to select two Clerks of Election to as-
sist them in holding said election. On
or before the tenth day after such
election the said officers holding said
election shall make due return of all
votes cast at their said voting place
for and against the said proposition to
the County Judge of Matagorda Coun-
ty, Texas, who shall tabulate and
count said returns and ascertain the
result of said election in the presence
of the County Clerk of Matagorda
County, Texas, and at least one Justice
of the Peace of said County or of two
respectable free-holders of Matagorda
County, Texas.
The above named Officers of Election
shall hold and conduct such Election
and make the returns thereof in ac-
cordance with the laws regulating the

lication of this citation once each week
for four successive weeks previous to
the return day thereof, in some news-
paper published in your county, If
there be a newspaper published there-
in, but if not, then in any newspaper
published In the 23rd Judicial District,
but if there be no newspaper publish-
ed in the said Judicial District,
then in a newspaper published in the
nearest District to said 23rd Judicial
District, to appear at the next regu-
lar term of district court of Matagorda
County, to be holden at .the courthouse
thereof, In Bay City, on the first Mon-
day In June, 1910, the same being the
6th day of June, 1910, then and there
to answer a petition filed in said
Court on the 11th day of May, 1910,

Jackson is the plaintiff and Westley

On Monday night Mrs. Able B.
Pierce entertained the young people of
blessing with a delightful dance.
The spacious dining hall of the
Blessing Hotel was beautifully adorn-
ed with ferne and capejessamines and
used as the ball room.
Delicious punch was nerved through-
out the evening, and during the in-
termission an ice course wan fully en-
joyed by all. *****
Those partaking of Mrs Pierce’s
