From Saturday’s Daily. ‘
With an infield shifted about till it
was not to be recognized, one of their
best bitters on the bench, and Bibb
“umpiring,” the Rice Eaters fell down
before their first audience of city folks
yesterday and gracefully gulped down
a goose-egg prescribed by the Bermu-
das, while the latter garnered five runs,
Platzer was in the box again and while
he gave up only five hits, errors be-
hind him helped pile up the runs, and
his team-mates let Hernandez off with
but three safeties.
Daily joined the hospital brigade
Wednesday with a sprained ankle. He
is not badly hurt, but was too sore to
get in yesterday, though he warmed up
before the game and tried hard to get
I in condition.
I The team plays in Tamaleville again
today, but will probably come home in
time to play here tomorrow.

For the first time since first series
the Rice Eaters are in position to be
yanked from the top of the per cen-
tage column—and what’s worse, our
dearest enemy, Victoria, is the one in
position to do the yanking. Under this
situation, the series between the Rice
Eatrs and the Rosebuds which opens
here today is the most interesting the
season has brought forth. The teams
play here today, at Palacious tomor-

Rained out at San Antonio, Friday,
the teams arrived Saturday and that
afternoon started the first game in
which the Bermudas have appeared
here. The contest went merrily for
five and a half innings, but in the 6th.
with Laredo at the bat with the bases
full and nobody out, the rain began to
fall and Umpore Bibb called off hosti-
lities, with" the score tied.
Starr and Peebles were pitted
against each other, both pitching great
ball. Scurry surprised the fans who
saw his performance and who cannot
account for his trouble in finding a
berth. He Is many points .better than
most of the twirlers who have visited
here.
Waterman, released by Brownsville,
was signed by Beeville and pitched
the game against his former team
mates Saturday. The Brownies won
by the score of 3 to 1.

The noticable rise in the tempera-
ture in Bay City today was’ not due to
any of the new astronomical phenome-
na, but to the hot line of talk the
■ fans handed out when they learned
this morning that the one-game en-
gagement at San Antonio had been in-
creased to four games, which includes
the three days Laredo and Bay City
were to have played at home. It was
warm enough before they heard the
particulars, but when they learned
that the team is crippled, that Bibb is
••umpiring" and that Bay City’s share
of-the gate receipts was less than $50,
the temperature sizzled. Prest. Stin-
nett, after consulting with others of
the club directors, wired the team to
come home after today’s game and get
here in time to play at the local
park tomorrow.
The Fate of the Quitter
Corpus Christi is talking about giv-
I ing up its franchise in the Southwest
Texas League, and if it does it will
be the worst advertisement that a
town ever had. It will not only brand
its people as a bunch of quitters but
will cause outsiders t o question
whether Corpus’s is boasted'prosperi-
ty is real or imaginary.—Victoria Ad-
vocate.
The town that quits at this stage of
the game will make itself the laughing
stock of the baseball world, and that
includes a large part of the business
and commercial world. The town that
is not game enough to hold up a ball
team under the circumstances exist-
ing in the Southwest Texas, where the
success of the new league has been
all along a question of the gameness
of the towns composing it, will be put
down at once by the world at large
as a town that will lie down In the face
of difficulties, no matter what the goal
may be. The world has no respect for
a quitter or a piker, whether it be
man or town, or whether the game be
baseball or frenzied finance. --
Twelve-Inning Game
Brownsville, Tex., May 19.—In by
far the best game seen here this sea-
son the Beeville Orange Growers de-
feated the Brownies this afternoon by
a score of 2 to 1, all of the runs be-
ing made in the 12th inning. Ander-
son. first up in the 12th, singled to left,
Gerhardt and Anderson going out
Wright singled to right, advancing An-
derson to second, who scored a mo-
ment later on McClintock's muff and
Knaupp's long fly, Wright going to
third and' scoring on Woesner's
grounder. Lucky Wright proved a
mystery to the Brownies, letting them
down with three hits, two singles and
a two-bagger by Peebles.

Yesterday’s was a pretty exhibition,
but not particularly enjoyable from the
viewpoint of the fans. It was a case
of too much Perez, for the little Cuban
twirler just wouldn’t let the locals
hit the ball. He made the season’s
pitching record against-the Rice Eat-
ers, allowing them only two hits. One
of these, however, was a be-autiful
three-bagger to deep center by Baum-
gartner, which scored the locals only
run.
On the other hand the Bermudas
found Robb often and in Clusters, and
with less excellent opposition in the
garden would have piled up an awful
lot of runs. In point of fielding the
Rice Eaters put up real classy ball, in
spite of the shifting of positions, Capt.
Blakeney at short being the head liner
with 6 put-outs and 3 assists without
a wobble. :
But the real feature of the game was
the high-handed burglary of bases
pulled off by Hamilton. That fleet-
footed youngster drew two passes dur-
ing the game and in each instance
proceeded without hesitation to steal
second and third, thus getting credit
for four stolen bases—the season’s re-
cord.
