Many Beautiful Homes Along West
Coast of Florida, Particularly in
Cities of Tampa and St. Petersburg
tower of Seville; other parts of the
buildings are replicas, or at least
very similar to structures la Ronda,
Granada, Cordova and other places
famed for their architecture.
Like No Other Hotel.
By JUANITA KINSET
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Aug. 28.
—Florida to a land of lovely houses
end there are many of them along
the weat coast, particularly to Tam-
pa and St. Petersburg. The connect-
ing link between the two cities to
the famoua Gandy Bridge, the
largest automobile toll bridge la
the world. It to a wonderful piece
of workmanship and to beautiful aa
well aa useful. It to six miles to
length and reduces the distance
from Tampa to St. Petersburg from
43 to 19 miles.
For a long time the people of the
Pinellas peninsula, on which “St.
Pete," aa the city to familiarly
called, to located, regretted have
ing to be so far separated from
Tampa, and finally G. 8. Gandy, a
leading figure in St. Pete, organ-
toed a company, raised three mil-
lion dollar, and spanned Tampa
Bay with the bridge which bears
his name. The tolls on the bridge
bring to a revenue of $5,000 per day.
The people interested claim to be
“ashamed to take the money," and
there to talk of reducing the toll,
which has already been cut one-
third, it now being IP cents '
Island in a Day.
It waa from Gandy Bridge that
we first saw an island to the process
of being made. It to a Florida
boast that aa island can be made
Shore in a day, and from all that
have seen, I am led to believe
their boast to not without founda-
tion. It is a wonderful eight to see
the machinery at work, sucking up
great quantities of shell and sand,
draining It and depositing it to tha
desired spot, adding to it until na
island to ready for occupation.
Tampa to a beautiful city and
affords almost .very type of recrea-
tion and entertainment. It to sotsd
all over the United States for its
fine golf course.; It ships more
phosphate than any other city in
the world, and beasts that it to
"the nearest available part of im-
portance to the United States to the
Panama Canal.”
Cigar Manufacture.
One of the leading industries of
Tampa is the manufacture of eigars.
Some idea of the scope of the in-
dustry may be gained from the sta-
tistics which show that Tampa
cigar manufacturer* pay nearly five
million dollars a yaar to revsnue
taxes.
St. Petersburg, tbs city ss noted
for it* winter sports, I* interesting
even new in the middle of the
summer. Its wide streets, fine
hotels, its parks, boulevards, and
lovely homes would present a pleas-
ing picture at any time.
Perhaps the most lovely sub-divi-
cion of St. Petersburg to tbs one
called Pasadena, and one of the
very loveliest of the homes In It to
the residence of the Dees, formerly
of Wichita Falla, and one of Its
most loved citizens to Mra. Mary El-
len Dee.
One of the chow pieces of all
Florida to the Hotel Rolyat of Pasa-
dena. Its queer name to derived
from the name st Mr. Jaak Taylor,
the president of the Pasadena Es-
tates. Spell Taylor in reverse order
and you have Rolyat, you see.
Unique Architecture.
The buildings are •• unique me-
dieval architecture, the tile to the
roots, centuries old, waa Importsd
from Spain. The rambling group of
buildings, arranged around a large
court to the midst of which are
lovely fountains and flowers in pro-
fusion, surmounted by turrets and
tower*, decked with balconies, open
staircases and rotundas, has aa ar-
cade passing entirely around its 1.-
100 feet.
The woodwork is of antiqued,
brilliantly colored peckie express
and this, combined with the mallow
tinted stucco, gives a distinctive
Spanish atmosphere.
The central note of the group is
a tower patterned after the golden
The Rolyat to not to the slight:
•at degree like any other hotel I
have ever seen. It looks like ple-
turee I have seen of old Spanish
settlements. Although various parts
of the buildings are patterned aft-
er specimens of the world’s boot
architecture, the hotel, aa a whole,
claims to be absolutely unique.
terest la the Domino, Chess and
Checkers Club, where al all hours
of the day man may be seen hav-
ing a wonderfully good time to-
gether at their favorite game,—and
all to the open air. It is very amue-
ing and yet why should it be any
‘ more eo than their wives’ indoor
bridge gamea?
From the t«w«r of the Rolyat a
far reaching elew may be had of
Boca Clegs Bay, the Gulf of Mexico
and the Florida Keys.
Among the buildings la Florida
which are unusual le the open air
postoffice of St. Petersburg. It is
queer to see people stop on the side-
walk before a wall of postoffice
boxes and get the mall.
Another out-of-door place of in-
Wide Sidewalks.
The sidewalks in St. Petersburg
are unusually wide, and there ar.
at least ons sr two gross benches
out sa tha walk to front ef even
ths least pretentious office or shop.
In fact St. Petersburg to said to
be known as the “City ef Green
Benches." However, that may be,
they are very convenient for the
tired shopper, the use pected meet-
ing of friends, or for a wait for
bus or ear.
Almost all Florida eities have a
second nemo and St. Petersburg’s
real second name to “The Sunshine
City". Perhaps this nomen to well
deserved, for it is said that dur.
lag a pertod of 5.118 days there
were only 75 during which the sun
did aot shine.
