UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN R. CUMTIINS, OF McKINNEY, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS FOR WHEEL-PLOWS.
Slneciflcation forming part of Letters Patent No. 213, 1.7S, dated March 11, 1879; application filed
December 21, 1878.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. CUMMINs, of
McKinney, in the county of Collin and State
of Texas, have 'invented a new and valuable
Improvement in Attachments for Wheel-
Plows; and I do hereby declare that the fol-
lowing is a full, clear, and exact description of
the construction and operation of the same,
reference being had to the annexed drawings,
making apart of this specification, and to the
letters and figures of reference marked there-
on.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representa-
tion of a top view of my invention. Fig. 2 is
a side view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a vertical
cross-section of the same.
This invention has relation to improvements
in attachments to sulky and other horse-plows.
The object of the invention is to do away
with the rigid or stiff movement of the beam,
and thereby to decrease the draft and cause
the plow to ran easily, and place the same un-
der the control of the clevis.
The nature of the invention consists in com-
bining, with a plow-beam, a circle-plate hav-
ing a transverse clamp-ridge, and clamps ex-
tending through said ridge and securing the
beam to the said plate, a bearing-plate, a king-
bolt connecting said plates, a transverse sleeve
on the under side of said bearing-plate, an
axle extending through said sleeve, adjusting-
collars on the axle, and transporting-wheels
on said axle, as will be hereinafter more folly
set forth.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A desig-
nates a plow-beam of a sulky, gang, or horse
plow, in connection with which I propose to
illustrate my invention. B indicates the cir-
cle - plate, having extending diametrically
across its upper face and projecting beyond
its perimeter a strong ridge, a, cqual to or
slightly greater in height than the beam afore-
said. The beam rests upon the plate afore-
said and bears against the ridge, and it is
confined thereto by means of the clamps b,
usually of U form, straddling the said beam
and extending through the ends of the ridgeand through the nuts c. The plate B rests
upon a bearing-plate, C, of corresponding
form--that is, provided uponits under side with
a transverse sleeve, d, through which extends
an axle, D, upon the ends of which are the
transporting - wheels E. The axle is held
against endwise displacement relative to the
sleeve by means of collars d', that are adjusted
on said axle against the ends of the sleeve by
means of set-screws e. I may, however, use
some other devices in lien of the collars and
screws.
The contiguous faces of the plates B and C
are ground true, and are connected together,
so that the latter rotates horizontally with
reference to the former by means of a bolt, f,
extending through the centers of the plates
aforesaid, and prevented from jolting out of
its place by a nut, a, or its equivalent, screwed
upon its lower end.
The fore end of the beam is attached by a
clevis to the sulky part of the implement, and
has secured to its rear end a plow.
It is evident that the device aforesaid conun-
teracts the rigid or stiff movement of the plow,
thereby decreasing the draft and placing the
said plow directly under the control of the
clevis.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure
by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a plow-beam, A, and
a circle-plate, B, provided with transverse
rib a, and having said beam clamped thereto
of the bearing-plate C, having transverse,
sleeve d extending beyond the edges thereof,
an axle, D, extending througli said -sleeve, a
pivot-bolt, f connecting the circle and bear-
ing plates, and adjustable collars d', substan-
tially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have
hereunto subscribed my name in the presence
of two witnesses.
JOHN RANDOLPH CUMMINS.
