UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
TOM PADGITT, OF WACO, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN STRAP-PROTECTOR AND BUCKLE.
Specilcation forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,S62, dated OctoLer 21, 1879; application filed
September 5, 1879.To ali whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I,To PADITTrT,of the city
of Waco, McLennan county, State of Texas,
have invented certain new and useful Improve-
ments in Strap-Protector and Buckle for Har-
ness, &c.; and 1 hereby declare the same
to be fully, clearly, and exactly described as
follows, reference being had to the accompa-
nying drawings, in which-
Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating my in-
vention as embodied in a combined buckle and
hook or strap-protector. Fig. 2 is a central
vertical sectional view of the device.
My invention has for its object to provide a
device, in connection with a buckle, for protect-
ing straps from wear at the points where they
come in contact with eyes or rings, as in the
breeching, breast, or hame straps of harness
and the eyes of metallic stirrups. At such
points the strap.is liable to wear and crack,
due as well to the actual friction as to its be-
ing bent sharply back upon itself, and sub-
jected to constant or intermittent strain.
In the accom panyingdrawings, Ais a buckle
having the usual cross-bar a' and tongue a,
and a keeper, b, for the end of the strap. On
the under side of the buckle-shankis a second
keeper, b', opposite the keeper b, and inter-
mediate between them and the bar a' is a
strong cross-bar, e, having a button, e'.
B is a hook formed integral with the buckle,
and having its lower edge, d, projecting over
the keeper b', as shown. (See Fig. 2.)
In attaching the device, the main part of
the strap C is led under the buckle and over
the keeper b', thence around the book B andunder the keeper b, and its end is attached to
the button c'. The other part of the strap is
attached to the buckle in the usual way and
its end is tucked under the keeper b, prevent-
ing the accidental dislodgment of the other
end of the strap from the button c'.
Previousto attaching thestrap,asdescribed,
the book B is made to engage with tie eye or
ring to which the strap would without it be
directly fastened.
It will be seen that the hook prevents the
abrasion of the strap, and bends it in such a
gentle curve as to obviate all danger of its be-
coming cracked or permanently bent.
Especially is the device adapted for use
upon stirrup-straps with metallic stirrups, in
which ease heretofore the strap soon became
worn at the stirrup-eye, and assumed a per-
manent bend or kink, which was unsightly
when the length of the strap was changed.
With the device described there is abso-
lutely no local wear of the strap, and, owing
to the curve of the hook, the strap does not
become cracked or bent.
Having thus described my invention, what
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters
Patent, is-
In combination with the buckle A, having
cross-bar e and inwardly-projectingbutton o',
the hook B and keepers b b', arranged for op-
eration substantially as set foith.
TOM PADGITT.
