AIDS program to schoo students
A Miss Austin County Farm
Bureau contest and a talent find con-
test will be sponsored by the
county farm bureau at the Sealy
High School Auditorium on June
24 at 7 p.m. June 1st is the dead-
line for entering either contest.
Eligibility rules for both contests
have been announced Applications
for either contest are available at the
Austin County Farm Bureau office
in Bellville. For further information
concerning the contests, interested
individuals may contact Vicki
Strieder at 885-4921 or Sandra
Kaminski at 885-6717.
To enter the Miss Farm Bureau
contest, a girl must be a daughter or
sister of a TFB member and must
reside in Austin County She must
be single (defined as never married
and without children); and between
the ages of 16 and 19 years as of
September I. 1995, Contestants
may enter only one county level
Miss TFB contest in a given year.
Contestants in the talent find cat-
egory must be between the ages of
16 and 19 years as of September I
They may enter only one county
level talent find contest in a given
year The performance of the act
must be confined to a normal stage
setting and not deemed dangerous in
nature to audience or participant.
Contestants must be amateurs
(defined as one who has not received
direct remuneration for the perfor-
mance of the talent.)
Farm Bureau employees, dealers
and/or servicing agents’ families
and previous state winners are not
eligible to enter either contest. No
contestant will be allowed to partic-
ipate at the district level in either
contest more than two times.
Winners in each contest will be
given $100 scholarships. Two
runners-up will also be selected.
Winners will advance to district
competition.
Miss Farm Bureau contestants
will be judged on individual inter-
views, on-stage appearance, poise,
pesonality and speech, plus im
promptu questions.
Talent find contestants will be
judged on audience appeal, perfor-
mance, appearance and professional-
ism.
Trades Day, Farmers Market is Saturday
Saturday’s Trades Day will in-
clude a Fanners Market in addition
to arts and crafts sold in downtown
Sealy. Area vegetable and other
produce growers are invited to bring
their products to town to sell along
with other vendors.
Sealy people are asked to come
and support the sellers in their of
terings from their gardens and
fields, as well as all other sales
people.

Awareness was presented by the
Scaly Noon I ions Club before
Sealy Junior High and high school
students Wednesday, April 26. at
the high school auditorium
Preseniors were Jim Turnbull.
Dr Bill Heimann and Gerri Briggs,
who brought a very impressive
message to the school students,
I They were introduced by Robert
Kent, president ol the club and a
member of the Sealy Independent
School District board ol trustees
Turnbull, who is, a paramedic
with the Houston Fire Department
and also with the Austin County
Emergency Medical Serv ice. opened
his discourse with "we are here to-
day to bring you a message that
you have a choice"
"We ate here to offer a better un-
derstanding ol a serious disease.”
Turnbull said, referring to AIDS.
Today s youth is bombarded with
music, movies and television
programs which are suggestive of
drugs and sex Alcohol and sex, and
drugs and sex seem to go hand in
hand Don't associate yourself with
drug users, he warned, and added,
"be aware ol the problem when you
are exposed to people you don't
know."
AIDS is spread by semen, saliva
and secretion sexual contact,
intervenous drug usage, and blood
products Twelve thousand people
have been affected, there have been
6000 deaths, and 1800 cases were
reported in the Houston area since
1994 He pointed out that the area
includes this community as well

Immune Virus AIDS is the final
stage of HIV

are other serious sexually transmit
ted diseases in addition to AIDS
which affect the lives of men and
women Syphilis, gonorrhea, her
pes, HPV and chlymadia, are all
dangerous diseases. He made strong
emphasis on avoiding sexual con
tact to protect young ■ men and
women from getting these ill
nesses. Contraceptives are not al-
ways effective.

Gerri has lost a small son, her
husband and a brother to the dis
case She told of the struggle with
her little hoy's illness and his even-
tual loss, hei support of her later
estranged husband, and her brother’s
passing.
She watches every physical
problem she encounters. Friends
who know of her problem are very
supportive other friends have not
been told, she said At one point
she gave way to emotion for a bit.
but otherwise was strong as she
told her story to let others know of
the devastation of AIDS, and that
there is a better choice of life.

bond pending trial, was taken into
custody by the Austin County
Sheriff’s Department and is in jail
