Here is a good question: Do you know what is a 'Bench Mark?1
By PETE SCHILLER_____________
Never heard of a bench mark,
. and had no idea what it was. In
the old days whei benches were
used more than ch<.as, some one
would always carve names, dates,
hearts, and initials. Don't forget
the plus, such as "LJ + MM", or
"LJ loves MM". You could have
told me this was a bench mark,
and I just may have believed you.
Asking the question, do you
know what a bench mark is, or
have you ever heard of it? The
Called Billy Hluchan, and
asked him the bench mark ques-
tions. Billy knew the answers. Ev-
idently, it is the first thing a sur-
veyor learns. I asked Billy some
more questions, he told me to see
Judge Bilski.
Doug Kubricht asked me about
the bench mark. He explained it
to me and mentioned one near
their property east of town. It had
a brass plate, and was imbedded
in concrete. Doug and I kicked
around in the weeds looking for it.
Ed Machac came up to see
what the heck we were doing. Ed
reply ninety percent of the time is
no to both questions. Webster's
definition of bench mark is, "a told me at a later date, that he
was hoeing, chopping, and dig-
ging, and hasn't found it yet. I
may be able to pin point it with
some information I have received.
Flood Program coordinator for
Austin County. The information
states that bench marks were es-
tablished by the Corps of Engi-
neers in 1929. Many in the county
have been destroyed by develop-
ment.
Bench marks are important to
residents who want to develop'
flood hazard areas. A surveyor or
engineer uses a bench mark to de-
termine the base flood elevation
in flood hazard areas.
What you need to do if you
aren't building on a high hill, is to
get a topographical map of the
area. You also need to be familiar
with the curvilinear line which
represents the area subject to in-
undation by a flood.
You have a lot of options, such
as the U.S. Army Corps of Engi-
neers, State Department of Water
Resources, County Water Control
Districts, or Flood Program Coor-
dinators. It is important to obtain
a development permit.
There are quite a few bench
marks in Austin County. Accord-
ing to the list, a lot of them are
surveyor's mark made on a per-
manent land mark of known posi-
tion and attitude, it is used as a
reference point in determining
other altitudes. At standard eleva-
tion or point of reference." \

Sail Boat and Sherman Brady Brick
along the railroad tracks; and they
give the year when established.
Bench Mark F209. 1.1 miles
northwest along Gulf, Colorado,
and Santa Fe Railroad from the
station at Sealy, Austin County,
0.4 miles south of milepost 96,150
ft. north of semaphore 952, at
triple-arch stone bridge 95-B at
the east end of the north abate-
ment, in the second step from the
top, 15.5 feet east of the east rail
of the track, and about eight feet
lower than the rail. A standard
disk, stamped "174.173F209.1933"
(53.099 meters of 174.209 feet).
Bench Mark Z208. At Bellville,
at the grade school (this was the
old high school in 1933), five feet
south of the center of the west
main entrance, 3 feet above the
ground, set in the top of the south
concrete balustrade of the steps.
A bench mark disk, stamped
"Z2081933" (79.8868 meters of
262. 10 feet).
These two bench marks used
fancy words such as abatement,
balustrade, and semaphore. Looks
like its back to "Webster’s", and
time to continue the educating
process.

At City Hall a few weeks back,
Mrs. Tori Jeffery told me of a sail
boat brick she had for me. I told
her I had a sail boat brick. (Fems'
Houston with a sail boat emblem
in the left corner), but would like
to have it for trading purposes.
Two surprises came with the
sail boat brick. First of all, this
brick was red. The one in my col-
lection was brown. Make some
space Mr. Brown, Mr. Red will be
by your side.
Surprise number two was an-
other brick. Tori asked if 1 wanted
it too. Did I want the brick? You
bet your last dollar that I wanted
it. The brick is a jewel of a brick,
it goes with the special bricks.
The brick is unique in that the
imprinted rectangle is deep. In
this deep imprint in an arch is
"Sherman Brady" and on the bot-
tom line is "Brick Co." Where
and when goes with unsolved
brick mysteries.
Tori mentioned that the pile of
bricks they have came from
Bernardo. She shouldn't have said
"Pile of bricks" because now I
have to ask the Jeffries if I may
go through the pile and see what
else of history is there. Work? No,
just pure pleasure. Maybe, just
maybe, there may be a Texas 2
star brick. There is no such brick,
and I had a dream of it being in
my collection.
The Texas 2 star brick dream
should come true Had a real
nightmare with the brick. Will
have to search in Boerne for it.
The Texas 2 star story could
make you weep.
