Sweet —
By BRUCE MEYER
United Press International
For a long time — longer than they
were willing to admit — Sweet were far
too appropriately named.
Sweet played a kind of hard rock-
bubble gum blend of music - a style
that left them without a constituency in
the United States
It was no problem elsewhere. Over a
period of eight years they sold 26
million records worldwide — and were
regularly voted among the most
popular bands in Europe.
But except for an overly cute single
called “Little Willy” a couple of years
ago, their impact on the huge American
market was virtually nil.
Now, all of that is changed. Sweet has
Smell Qf Success
had two major single hits — "Ballroom
Blitz” and “Fox on the Run” - in the
past four months, and sales of their
“Desolation Boulevard" album
(Capitol ST-11395) atp. excellent
Recently they were a smash success in
their first U.S. appearance in L A
There are two good reasons for the
apparently abrupt change First, Sweet
have finally become an all-out rock n
roll band. Second, and more important,
they have started doing their own
writing and producing for the first time
“Fortunately in America," says
drummer Mick Tucker, commenting on
the change in image, “a lot of people
have latched onto ’Desolation
Boulevard' - and before that, to the
‘Little Willy' album - and we got a sort
of a cult following out of it. Luckily,
they’ve forgotten that we were once
another sort of a band.”
That "other sort of band" amounted
to being a front group for a couple of
talented but gimmicky songwriters
named Nicky Chinn and Mike Chap-
man For most of their lengthy and
successful career, Sweet played
nothing but Chapman-Chinn tunes —
and as a result made no significant
impact on the American audience
Now it’s all changed Sweet is doing
their own material — and suddenly the
New World is opening up to their music
As guitarist Andy Scott puts it. "The
musicianship was always there, but it
was a matter of developing our own
writing." .
