Syrians Advance
In Lebanon War
BEIRUT Lebanon (UPD - Two columns of Syrian army
tanks and troops advanced into Lebanon 's central mountains
today, clashing for the first time with Moslem militiamen
and threatening a major confrontation with leftist and
Palestinian forces
Moslem gunmen fought Syrian-backed Saiga guerrillas in
the streets of Beirut, prompting authorities to close Beirut
international airport "until further notice " It was one of the
bloodiest battles of the 14-month-old civil war
A Syrian strike force of several hundred troops moved west
from positions near Dahr al Baider.on the Beirut-Damaseus
highway 30 miles east of the capital toward leftist
strongholds in the mountains, rightist and leftist reports said
The reports said the Syrians rolled about six miles on the
highway toward Beirut from their base camps in the eastern
Bekaa Valley into the leftist held mountains
The rebel leftist faction or the Lebanese army said its
troops clashed with the Syrian column at the crossroads town
of Mdeirij, is miles east of Beirut, halting the Syrian ad-
vance.
The leftists said they destroyed four Syrian tanks in the
battle and captured two others.
A second column of Syrians marched slowly from the
Bekaa toward leftist battlelines around the villages of Ain-
tourah and Metein six miles north of Dahr el Raider, reports
from the area said.
