Where To Call
Friday, June 18. 1976
Friday,
HOUSTON (AP) - An FBI
spokesman says the wife of
an Exxon USA executive
may have averted near
tragedy when she
recognized that a letter
forwarded to her new ad-
dress contained a terrorist
letter bomb
Marjorie Dennstedt, wife
of Frederick Dennstedt,
Exxon vice president for
refining, found the envelope
Thursday in the noon mail
along with other letters,
authorities said
Houston bomb squad of- ■
ficer J C Ashby, who
disarmed the letter bomb,
said the hand-cancelled
envelope had been sent June
11, but was forwarded be-
cause the Dennstedts had
moved and it was mailed to
their old address
He said she recognized the
letter because she had been
warned by her husband to be
on the watch for suspicious
mail She immediately put
the envelope hack in the mail
box and called her husband,
who notified authorities
"She was very lucky.”
said John Reilly, assistant
special agent in charge of the
FBI here "The bomb was
fully active and if opened
would have detorated and
probably caused a great deal
of damage"
Reilly said the letter, later
described by bomb squad
officials as about nine inches
by 12 inches and postmarked
Texarkana, Tex., would be
forwarded to the Washington
FBI lab
The FBI said the letter
bomb appeared to be similar
to those which have showed
up previously in various
parts of the country in what
has been described as an
extortion plot
Dennstedt was the second
Exxon official here to
receive a letter bomb
The wife of U. J
LeGrange, president of
Exxon Pipeline Co., opened a
letter Monday containing a
blasting device Authorities
said the apparatus failed to
detonate because of a
defective connection

Help For Flood Area
HOUSTON (AP) — Gov Dolph Briscoe, calling the
Houston area flooding one of the worst in Texas, has asked
President Ford to declare Harris County a disaster area.
The governor personally inspected Thursday the areas
damaged by floods caused by rains up to 13 inches Tuesday
and Wednesday and then sent a telegram to the White House.
In the giant Texas Medical Center, where basements in
virtually every institution in the complex were flooded,
damage was estimated at 810 million
Briscoe said he was told there also is at least $700,000 worth
of damage to the Houston Contemporary Arts Museum which
also suffered basement flooding
U.S. Rep Barbara Jordan, D-Tex . sent a telegram to the
National Endowment for the Arts requesting their maximum
initial grant of $17,500 to help the museum recover
While the governor toured the area, rescue workers con- -
tinued the long range mopping up process
“There is no question about it being a disaster area,"
Briscoe said after a helicopter tour
"The disaster teams are to be congratulated on the fine job
they've done.”
Asked his reaction to the flooding problems in the medical
center, Briscoe replied “It’s now obvious it's a mistake to
build a basement in an area with a 100-year floodplain."
"But what I’ve seen here today makes me confident in the
ability of the people of Houston to handle anything that comes
along This has to be one of the worst occurrences of flood in
Texas history."
Reinette Cottingham, with the American Red Cross, said
- - about 2,215 families suffered loss or damage in the flooding _
which also was directly or indirectly responsible for the
deaths of at least eight persons
Although most of the hospitals in the medical center were
forced to limit their operations because of power losses and
water damaged supplies, they have returned to normal sur- •
" gery and out-patient operations

resources management”
He referred to a
requirement that the Corps
approve any change in the
waterways, including
streams, creeks and ir-
rigation ponds, before the
work can commence
An amendment in the
House has limited the
authority to cover only
navigable waters, but no
change has been made in the
Senate
“We urge and beg our
senatorial delegation to work
for speedy progress on this
or similar legislation," Moon
said at a breakfast for Texas
participants in the National
Conference of the Water
Resources Congress
He singled out problems
surrounding the proposed
Lake Limestone on the
Navasota River.
Moon said the Fish arid
Wildlife Service was
demanding that 15.300 acres
be acquired by the Brazos
River Authority, which
wants to build the lake as a
wildlife reserve to replace
the land that would be
covered by the lake
"The Brozos River
Authority does not have the
authority to acquire the
land,” he said.
