The wind balloons this blue satin pajama outfit
fashioned and modeled by Brandy Smith. A dainty
white lace yoke trims the garment and two self-fabric
bows close It in the front. The gathers at the yoke and
leg cuffs create the billowy effect In this sleep wear.

Brandy Redd Smith enjoys being comfortable. Her way of
talking reflects that feeling; her words flow easily, openly
— Her gestures are relaxed and smooth She likes the simplicity
of outdoor life. And, most of all, her clothes express the
feeling.
Mrs. Smith, 23 years old, designs her own clothing A senior
at North Texas State University, she is majoring in fashion
design.
She enthusiastically described her passion for designing:
"An idea just pops into my head and I think, 'How neat! I've
got to do that!’” Her ideas have developed into prize-
winning fashions; she received a cash award in a national
fashion design contest earlier this year for two of her sket-
ches.
And the creations have provided the tall (5-foot-10-inches),
slender student with a wide array of interesting clothes — all
comfortable, of course. "I like to be comfortable, and a little
unusual. But not fragile,” she said. “Clothes are not for
hanging up on a rack to admire."
Mrs Smith chooses fabrics that lend themselves to
draping, which makes a more easily worn garment, she said
She enjoys working with silks and wovens and has begun
1 sewing more with the natural fibers becoming so popular
now.
Though she uses many of the materials highly fashionable
for today's clothing scene, her styles are quite inventive and
definitely not the "ordinary" look "I like to stay just ahead
of the popular designs." Mrs Smith said. "Some people
would call my clothes strange. I call them unusual. I like to
cook unusual things too."
The lithe Mrs. Smith displayed some of her "unusual"
fashions: a wraparound dress made from a bedspread, a pale
pink coverup she printed herself by the silkscreen method
and a dress with a curved hem to match its curved yoke
Several styles were very versatile One caftan-cut dress had
a matching scarf which could be tied at the waist, across the
chest or fanny-style
Mrs Smith wears her dresses at a longer length than most
women, she said. The below-the-knee styles come just a little
further below the knee on her than the length of the popular
style today. That length was just more comfortable, she
explained
The young designer credits her mother, also an ac-
complished seamstress, with encouraging her to become a
fashion designer "She started letting me design my own
clothes at about age 5." she said After her husband, Danny,
finally convinced her she could handle the art requirements
for an NTSU fashion design major, the Dentonite entered the
field in earnest “It’s much more fun" than majoring in
physics, she said
Her future9 Mrs Smith hopes to eventually be a freelance
designer. She said she thinks her clothes are more specialty
designs, not production-line styles. But she thought she would
work in a regular clothing factory some time. “I need to go
through the experience of a factory. I’ve got a lot of learning
left to do. even after college," she added

At right, the young designer sewed 48 squares of tie-
dyed material together, with the seams on the out-
side. to make this casual outfit. The multi-colored,
strapless dress is jagged at the bottom. Mrs. Smith
tightly wrapped the material around a broom handle
for the wrinkled effect.
