homicide in the pugil stick death of Pvt. Lynn
E McClure, says he wants to remain a Marine

new fighting men.

the fifth day of his general court martial at the
Marine Corps Recruit Depot Friday “I still
want to be a drill instructor "

a computer aboard the Viking spacecraft
began putting the unmanned explorer through
maneuvers Saturday to send it into orbit
around,Mars
With a July 4 landing on the planet just two
weeks away, the robot craft prepared to begin
intensive scouting of its planned touchdown site
where it will search for Martian life

with impressive accuracy
“If you compared the accuracy with a flight
from Los Angeles to New York, we could have
hit an object the size of a dinner plate," said
William O'Neil, chief of the Flight Path

Forest Fire
The Porter Fire, which officials said was
started by humans Wednesday, was the latest
and worst of a rash of New Mexico forest fires
that prompted federal and state officials to
impose smoking and campfire restrictions on
all public lands in the state
"The fire boss called the fire contained at 10
a m., which means we have a fire line around
it. " said Forest Service spokesman Lee Singer.
“But there's a lot of work to be before we can
get it controlled
"There's a lot of unburned fuel within the the
boundary of the fire line," he said “It's going
to cook quite a while, but we're mopping up as
we go along.”
Disaster Area
Gov. Dolph Briscoe announced Saturday
President Ford declared Harris County a
major disaster area
The action will make federal relief and
recovery assistance available to individuals
and businesses affected by the heavy rains and
severe floods last week
Representatives of state and federal agen-
cies will meet Sunday to coordinate the
assistance program
Plans call for assistance centers to be set up
to allow individuals to receive advice and
assistance from governmental officials in
making applications for loans and grants.
Atheist Holidays
Atheist Madalyn Murray O’Hair says the
Such “natural events belong to all mankind,"
Mrs. O'Hair said in a statement, while
"religious and national holidays are esoteric to
an understanding of the nation or the religion."
She noted that the solstice occurs when the
sun is at its greatest distance from the celestial
equator, and the equinox is either of the two
times each year when the sun "crosses the
equator" and day and night are of equal length
everywhere.
A pictorial display commemorating black
legislators and constitutional delegates before
1900 will be unveiled at the Capitol on Sunday.
The display was prepared by the Institute of
Texan Cultures in conjunction with Rep. Paul
Ragsdale’s office Ragsdale, D-Dallas, is a
black legislator.
He said he hoped the display would focus
attention on the need for more information “to
bring back to the citizens of Texas a significant
part of black history .. that has been
forgotten, lost, ignored or destroyed."
The unveiling ceremony is scheduled for 4
p.m in the House chamber.
Firefighters Saturday contained a 5,500-acre American atheist community will celebrate
forest fire that destroyed an estimated $6 four major holidays each year — the summer

Child Custody
"To us, if we don't get the children, it would
be like another death, " says an Austin woman
seeking custody of two children whose parents
were recently murdered in Dallas.
"We don't have a whole lot of money for court
fights, but we've made up our minds to fight for
those kids." Treva Lininger told an in-
terviewer.
Her husband. Jerry, is the brother of Hazel
Locklear who, with her husband Billy, was
found slain Tuesday in their Dallas home. The
Lininger a have a four-year-old daughter.
The Locklears’ bodies were tied together,
and they had been stabbed repeatedly, police
said.
The Locklears' children, Billy Jr., 3, and
Mary Ann. 2, had been in the home with the
bodies for at least three days, police said.
They are in the custody of Dallas welfare
officials, pending a court hearing next Friday.
Corning Recall
Corning Glass Works said Saturday it was
recalling 360,500 electric percolators because of
complaints from several consumers that they
were injured when the percolators came apart.
The recall affects certain 10-cup models
made during 1974, the company said. An epoxy
material binding the handle to the pot has
weakened, the company said, and can cause
the glass-ceramic pot and the stainless steel
collar to separate.
Corning said a defective pot could be iden-
tified in the following ways:
—It must have model numbers E1210, E1210-
4 or E1210-8, found behind the handle.
—It must have no number on the stainless
steel band at the right of the handle.
—Inside the pot. there must be a dot to the
left of either the eight-or 10-cup capacity mark.
Persons who own a defective pot can obtain a
free replacement by following instructions
which will be available after July 7 at local
Corning retailers, the company said.

Democrats Lack Harmony
As State Convention Ends

quick move for adjournment
GUEST GAVELLED through the ad
journment and in the same breath ordered
"Let us stand for the benediction" and the
convention was over
There were a lot of disgruntled
Democrats. Many of them were unhappy at
the precipitate pushing through of the final
delegate committee report, while others
questioned the omission of the report of the
resolutions committee , Some grumbled
their doubts of the competancy of the Carter
workers who seemingly had thwarted
district delegation hopes.
It was perhaps a unified result, as Gov
Dolph Briscoe and other state leaders had
urged, but it was not a unified body of
Democrats that left the Sam Houston
Coliseum. There were loud "boos" when
Briscoe’s name was called out on the list of
delegates and even louder cheers when
former Sen. Ralph Yarborough was an-
nounced on the alternate list.
Bill Brannon. Denton County delegation
leader, said he was pleased with the results
of the district's push for representation on
the national delegation although it did
emerge altered from the original plan
Denton County, one of the largest
delegations in the 17-county senatorial
district, won one of two committee position
goals set earlier Yvonne Jenkins was
named to the Rules Committee.
Lloyd Odle, nominated for the all-
important Nominating Committee to the
Democratic Convention, was defeated by
Montague County candidate Earl Nunneley.
Joe Guerrero of Stephens County was
named presidential elector for Senatorial
Dist. 22 on a list that was confirmed without
opposition by the convention Saturday af-
ternoon.
Gov. Dolph Briscoe's vaunted claims of
party unity were ripped apart Friday night
in a liberal-led challenge of Dallas
Senatorial Dist.16.

Officers Say
Bomb Threat
Was Hoax
A bomb threat early
Saturday at the Jack-In-The-
Box restaurant on Univer-
sity Drive apparently was a
hoax, according to police
reports
Police said a phone call
received at the restaurant at
3 a.m. said there was a bomb
in the building and that it
would go off in 15 minutes.
Officers and Tiremen
responding to the call
searched the building but
found no bomb, police said.
Denton police, checking a
car that matched the
description of a stolen
vehicle, discovered con-
traband of another type
Saturday morning. Officers
said they spotted a small,
foreign car on the Carriage
Square parking lot which
resembled one reported
stolen.
They said the car was
unlocked and contained
valuable equipment, in-
cluding a CB radio. Officers
said they spotted a jar of
what appeared to be
marijuana in the floorboard.
Further search turned up a
vial of white pills, with
crosses on one side, police
said.
The vehicle and its con-
tents were impounded.
Police arrested a 30-year-
old man around 8 p.m.
Friday after witnesses at
Flow Hospital said he broke

parent argument with his
wife, police said.
