HIGHLAND. VILLAGE - City coun-
cilmen here probably would be the first to
tell you that they don't condone missing a
council meeting, or any official meeting, for
any reason.
But, last week they were reluctant to put
that in the form of a "no-ifs" resolution.
That proposal, Councilman Dave Bogert’s
suggestion, would have automatically
removed any member of the city council or
any other city board appointed by the
council who missed three consecutive
regularly-scheduled meetings or 50 per cent
of that board's regularly-scheduled
meetings.
Presently, each case of absence is decided
as a separate case, but Bogert saw the
necessity of such a rule since Highland
Village is a relatively small city.1
Because members of city boards usually
are not only associates but are friends and
neighbors, he said, such an iron-clad rule
would free the major and council for having
to remove a board member
"The boards are hurt by absences, no
matter their validity,” Bogert said.
His move was prompted by the Dallas City
Council's recent adoption of a similar
resolution.
Councilman Kent Camp was in agreement
with Bogert, but councilmen Mike Babler
and Harold Merriman obviously were not
and voted against the resolution. Coun-
cilwoman Collette Jordan was absent
“I do not think we as a country town are
ready for a resolution like this,” Merriman
said. "In Dallas, yes. In Highland Village,
no." ■___
Babler added that the city has "too many
ordinances on file now just for the sake of
something that might happen."
Mayor Robert Turpin broke the council's
tie vote to defeat the resolution and said
later of the proposal. “I don't think we're
ready for it."
