Labor Ready
To Support
Democrats
By ROBERT V DOBKIN
AP Labor Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) - The politically
powerful AFL CIO is ready to endorse
Democratic nominee Jimmy Carter and
jump into presidential politics again after
sitting out the 1972 campaign
The S-member Executive Council of the
nation s biggest labor organization is
meeting today and is expected to vote to
back the Democratic ticket Its recom-
mendation goes to the 152-member General
Board, which makes the AFL-CIO's official
endorsements
The board meets Aug. 31, after the
-Republican convention. But a council
recommendationfor Carter and his vice
presidential running mate. Sen Walter F
Mondale, isn't likely to be rejected
AFL CIO President George Meany in-
dicated earlier that support for Carter
would be forthcoming but that he wanted the
council to wait until after the Republicans
met next month However, labor sources
said council members returning from last
week s Democratic convention in New York
pressured Meany to act now
“They want to get on the bandwagon."

GEORGE MEANY
. .Labor Leader
Some labor delegates at the convention
criticized Meany both publicly and privately
for his decision to sit out the primary
elections this year, following his neutral
stance four years ago
Meany skipped the Democratic con-
vention that nominated Carter, but aides
said it w as personal business, not lack of
enthusiasm, that kept him home.
With the labor federation solidly behind
Carter, it could call on an army of political
workers from among 14 million unionists.
That alone would represent millions of
dollars worth of support

SPIRITUAL PROGRAM
In the deepest sense the Good Samariton, Jesus Christ, is
the source of guidance for The Ev. Lutheran Good Samaritan
Society. It is only fitting and right, then, that we speak and
listen to Him daily and that we look to Him for direction.
This we do in our centers by providing daily devotions grace
at meals, hymn sings Bible studies, weekly services, large
print spiritual publications and by notifying pastors of new
residents. We encourage pastors of all faiths to take part in
our spiritual program. -

ABOUT
V P BY CARROLL GOEN
"Cheer up, things could be worse!” How true the
words are! And sometimes when one does cheer
up, things do get worse! On those occosions it
really takes an optimist to see things through,
especially when situations and times are tough.
It is easy to acquire a cynical attitude, disbelief and
fatalistic outlook. And so pessimism is born.
It should be realized pessimism usually reflects
inaction. Waiting. Doing little if anything to change
a situation or make things better. Should it not also
be realized that waiting and inaction NEVER accom-
plishes a thing? Should it not be realized that an op-
timist must be active, not passive?
Harry Truman once said, "I have never seen pes-
simists make anything work or contribute anything
of lasting value. It takes optimists to make the
world work, because eventually some of their ideas
are put into practice to help mankind" ... In today's
language can it not be said, "He said a mouthful?"
