AND THEN THERE ARE
THE ULTRA-VITAL ISSUES
IT IS V I ASK Houston sees as formidable hut
not impossible He is more and more optimistic
over the admittedly long shot chance of winning a
write-in race against a candidate whose name is
printed on the ballot
That optimism is reflected in his initial cam
paign literature which is themed It can be
done”*
Houston. 211th Dist Judge of Denton County is
opposing Don Yarbrough, who won the
Democratic nomination for the associate
associate justice post on the Supreme Court in.
what many political observers felt was mistaken
identification with another politician, Don Yar
borough as well as former 1 S Sen Ralph Yar
borough... -----------------------
Immediately after Yarbrough won the primary
election, his entanglements in a number ol law
suits charging him with fraudulent—financial
manipulations and non payment of an assortment
of debts made headlines across the slate
Houston subsequently was asked by a coalition
of attorneys to oppose Yarbrough for two basic
reasons he has the necessary judicial
'qualifications for the Supreme Court position.
And he obviously has a name easily recognized .
by all Texans w hich Houston's supporters feel is a
prerequisite to waging a successful write in
campaign *
Houston attorney Tom Lorance is also a write in
candidate lor the position
After formally announcing his candidacy two .
weeks age-Heusion has begun travels across the
state on a schedule that has seen him in Amarillo
one day back in his district court here the next to
take care pt local duties and then off to Austin
IT is \ schedule that he expects to intensify
through October when he will take off vacation
time from his courtroom.
He will be in Fort Worth Monday, at the Nor
theast Texas Bar Association Thursday, and the
state Democratic convention in Fort Worth Friday
and Saturday -

The TV football season is back with us. in
spite of those who say it never went away
And it’s time once again to focus our at-
tention on the personalities associated with
the game
For once, though I'd like to see the TV
cameras swing away from .the playing field
just before game time, and have the an-
nouncer introduce the starting lineup in the
grandstands
YOU’LL INSTANTLY recognize many
people from years gone by when their faces
flashed on the screen during fistfights on the
field, or while the cam eramanwassear -
ching out pretty girls just as your favorite
team made the winning touchdown
First there’s Melvin Mugger Melvin is
only 15 years old But he has developed an
uncanny instinct for anticipating which part
of an 80,000 seat stadium will draw the at-
tention of the TV-cameras

Don’t get up to get a sandwich at half-

loves football more than anything else in the
world He never misses a home game
UNFORTUNATELY he’s forced to take
along his four-y ear-old son So he spends the
first half of the game under the bleachers
standing in line at concession stands,
loading up on junk food for the boy to eat
YOU’LL SEE him in every shot of the during the halftime show

Then there’s Cecil Celebrity. He always
has a box seat on the 50-yard line. It’s the
worst place in the stands to see the game.

Ed Morrison is President of The Morrison Milling Company. He s also ‘
a stockholder of First State Bank. Ask him to describe his feelings
about the bank, and he does it this way. Our firm has had 40 years
experience with First State Bank and they’ve been with us all the
way. They're not a fair weather friend’, but we ve enjoyed a lasting,
dependable relationship. About the bank I have a feeling of confi-
dence. They’re a good and loyal friend." Ed Morrison believes, as we
do, that in banking, people make the difference. Stop in soon and
see what we mean. Come grow with us.

Sen. Tom Creighton has endorsed and
committed his support to Briscoe s plan to

plus one assault. Police sources say, as far
as they can determine, the youth has not yet
been taken before a juvenile court Another
boy, also 16, taken into custody last week for
attempted burglary of a vehicle and public
intoxication, is a similar'case: In' the past
two years he has been picked up by officers
for theft, auto theft, unauthorized use of a
vehicle, plus complaints dating back prior to
1975 for trespassing and being a suspicious
person "
"I believe in giving a second chance to a
kid, " says one officer, "but this is
ridiculous." Permissiveness to recurring
offenders not only does not act as a
deterrent to a juvenile, police say, but in-
stead is just the reverse — an incentive to
continue and probably increase their of-
fenses, since no punishment is forthcoming
Texas' family code, which rigidly lays out
how juveniles must be handled under the
law, does provide for court action and
eventual adjucation as a delinquent for
repeat juvenile offenders \
