DALLAS (AP) _ The
talent-rich Dallas Cowboys,
who have replaced eight
starters from their Super
Bowl X team, officially
welcome new Coach Dick
Vermeil of the Philadelphia
Eagles into the National
Football League Sunday in
an opener for both teams
The Eagles lost all six of
their preseason games
prompting Vermeil who left
Rose Bowl champion UCLA,
to conclude "I didn't expect
to walk right into a winning
situation All the jobs with
winners have been taken '

Eagles, who haven’t had a
winning season since 1966,
through a rough camp and
extended two a day drills
right into August The six
- straight exhibition losses
marked the longest losing
streak in Vermeil’s coaching
career on any level
The Eagles come off a 4 in
campaign while Dallas was
the direct opposite and lost a
heartbreaker 2117 to Pitt
sburgh in the Super Bowl
Vermeil says it’s a tough
way to open the season
against Dallas a team he
has picked to win the
National <Conference
Eastern Division “because
they didn’t graduate any
seniors '.
While Vermeils one-liner
brought laughs it should be
noted that Dallas < oac h Tom

his first game at quarterback, ignited Houston s stagnant of-
lense late in the first half Saturday and celebrated the

them to a 23-5 upset over Baylor
The Bears had assumed a 5-0 lead in the opening quarter

deep in the second period
But Davis suddenly got Houston's ground game working in
the final moments of the second quarter and only a goal line
stand by Baylor preserved the Bears lead in the first half
