Bike Ride To Benefit School

Theta Kappas Taking Pledges For Sunday Event
Pledges of funds to participants in the upcoming
Bike A Thon sponsored by Theta Kappa Chapter
of Beta Sigma Phi to benefit the Denton County
Developmental Center, are still being accepted
The Bike-A-Thon will be staged Sunday with
Theta Kappa members earning the financial
contributions by completing a 20-mile bicycle ride
through the city
The beneficiary Developmental Center is a
school for children who are unable to attend public
schools due to physical, mental or emotional
handicaps and pre-school age children with ’
special needs
Pledges may be made by contacting Mrs Jim
Hall, 382-4670, or Mrs Steve Struble, 382. -1968

‘Fashions Of Yesteryear’
A silver tea and style show, "Fashions of
Yesteryear," will honor Flow Memorial Hospital
on ita 25th anniversary at 1 30 pm Oct 21 at
Denton Country Club
Sponsored by the Flow Memorial Hospital
Auxiliary, the event is open to the public Tickets,
$5 per person, are now on sale from auxiliary
members or at the hospital gift shop
Goodwill Industries of Dallas wil provide the
models and old-fashioned clothing for the style
show, which will offer a reminiscent view of
fashions from years long past
Singles Plan Teen Night,
Initiate New Rap Session
Upcoming activities planned by the Denton
County Singles Association range from a new rap
session to "Teenager Night" at the group s
clubhouse located at the corner of Stuart Road
and Hercules
The club's Saturday activities, all held at the
clubhouse, are from 8:30 pm to I a m Future
events for that night of the week are "Get
Acquainted Night" this Saturday with live music
by Ronnie Lane and admission free for all women
and $1 for men, and “Teenager Night" Oct 23,
with music presented by the band Travesty All
' members’ children and guests junior high age
through age 20 will be admitted with a paying
adult for no extra charge.
On Oct 30, a Halloween costume party will
feature live music by Ace High A party night Nov
6 will feature the band Sunny Daze, and a party
night scheduled for Nov 13 will include music by
Corky and the Del Reys.
Admission for each Saturday event beginning
with "Teenager Night" will be $2 50 for members
$4 for nonmembers
The new rap session will begin Nov 10
The association opens its clubhouse each Friday
night in October from « 30 until midnight for a free
evening of dancing, socializing and information
about the group On Tuesday nights, the clubhouse
is open from 8 30 to 10 30 for game night
At the group’s recent covered dish supper and
monthly business meeting, President Jim Nicks
announced the resignation of clubhouse director
Dorothy Welborn and publicity director Doris
Dundas George Thompson will serve as new
clubhouse director and Vice-President Sherry
Wells will serve in the publicity director ’s position
until a new director is elected
ESA 1 Theta Phi To Raise
Kidney Foundation Funds
During October, members of the Theta Phi
Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha will sell night
lights, with all proceeds going to the Kidney
Foundation of Texas
The fund raising project is one of the chapter’s
annual service activities Linda' Touraine is
service chairman
At the group’s recent meeting a model business
session was held by the group to demonstrate to
new pledges how Theta-Phimonthly business
meetings are conducted President Nancy Kniatt
led the meeting and Linda Bomar served as
hostess Peggy Shelton, a guest, also became a
pledged member of the chapter at the event
DAEYC Sponsors Panel
On Services For Children
The Denton Association for the Education of
Young Children will observe the Year of the Young
Child and the 50th anniversary of AEYC by
presenting a panel on Denton services for children
from 7to 8p m Thursday on radio station KDNT
The panel discussion will serve to inform the
community on plans to improve services for young
children in Denton and on what youngsters needs
are
Panelists will include Frellie H Means, director
of the First Baptist Child Care Center, Clara Lee.
City County Day Care Center director. Kay
Conaway director of Tomorrow’s Generation Day
Care Center, and Peg Carter, graduate assistant
in the Texas Womans University College of
Education and Denton AEYC president
Dr Velma E Schmidt, North Texas State
University professor of education, and Dolly
Thiem, graduate student in child development at
TWU, are cochairpersons of the Y ear of the Young
Child Committee -

Highlights Ariel Club Meeting
An American musicale comprised the program
at the Monday meeting of the Music Department
of Ariel Club
Mrs Robert Mizell served as program chair-
man The musical presentation included the
following selections
Mrs Grant Davis, accompanied by Mrs Amos
Barksdale sang three songs by the first native-
born American composer, Francis Hopkinson
The selections were "The Traveler Be Knighted,"
"My Love Has Gone to Sea" and "Beneath the
Weeping Willow Shade "
Two numbers from Gershwin’s "Porgy and
Bess" "Bess You Is My Woman" and "Sum-
mertime" arranged for concert piano by Beryl
Rubinstein, were presented by Mrs Barksdale
Mrs Mack Vaughan accompanied Mrs. Hugh
Kirkpatrick, who sang "Rain Has Fallen" by
Barber and two poems by Emily Dickinson set to
music by Aaron Copeland Heart. We W ill Forget
Him" and "Why Do They Shut Me Out of
Heaven'’"
Dr Joan Groom and Mrs David Kuehn played
two movements of "Duo lor Flute" and "Double
Bass," composed by Miss Groom
Ann Bradley concluded the program with a
review of Music's Wonder Woman. Sarah
Caldwell: who developed an opera company in
Boston Miss Bradley said the woman is called the
first lady of American opera "
Mrs Floyd Graham served as hostess for the
meeting, held in her home. Mrs. Charlie Rann was
cohostess
Guests were Mrs Charles Veazy, Winnie Helm
and Edith Winston

Dennis Richey. 3, has a double goal in approaching Denton County Develop-
mental Center head teacher Mickey Gowler. A spina bifida victim. Dennis takes
pride in every step he’s learning to take and he also knows there’s a reward in
store for him in the "treat box” Mickey holds. The Developmental Center, where
Dennis and other handicapped children attend Monday through Friday classes,
will be beneficiary of the Sunday Bike-A-Thon sponsored by Theta Kappa Chapter
of Beta Sigma Phi. .
