Seniors Discovering Potential In Peace Corps
For anyone who still thought Peace Corps
volunteers were all recent college graduates, the
current rash of interviews with Lillian Carter
makes one thing clear — there are no age limits in
the Peace Corps
The mother of presidential candidate Jimmy
Carter at age 68 joined the Peace Corps and went
trekking off to India as a volunteer She calls the •
two years she served as a nurse in the Peace Corps
“the most wonderful years of my life, every thing I
ever wanted to do was fulfilled "
This year, as the Peace Corps celebrates its 15th
anniversary, 333 of its 6,200 volunteers are older
Americans Peace Corps volunteers are serving in
69 developing countries in Africa, Latin America.
Asia, the Near East and the Pacific
TO ELSIE HONKALA, who, like Miss Lillian,"
is also 77 and a registered nurse two years in the
Peace Corps was barely a start When she retired
from Peace Corps service last month, Mrs
Honkala had been a Peace Corps volunteer for 11
years During her extended Peace Corps
assignment, she served in El Salvador, Ceylon and
Morocco.
Mrs. Honkala says she always asked to be sent
to "the most remote, isolated areas " in El
Salvador, they took her at her word
She was sent to a town where "they d never seen
an American before. The town needed everything
— a latrine program, a water system, a cattle pen
and a clean plaza But what did the town council
want? A new bandstand "
Mrs. Honkala recalls she swallowed hard and
said "Why not 3 I decided that somehow the new
bandstand could be used as a gimmick to get the
other things they needed more
And it worked I got everyone building it and
when it was finished I told them they’d have to
live up to this new bandstand and the guests they d
invite lor its concerts
Mrs Honkala’s scheme was successful The
villagers built a new water system for the town,
which they made by constructing catch basins for
the streamlets that flowed from the side of the
mountain
"GR W ITY TOOK care of the rest and guided
the water to a big cistern wash tubs, horse
troughs and the latrines at the foot of the moun-
tain," she relates with satisfaction
Mrs Honkala sums up her 11-year experience
by saying, "I feel greatly obliged to the Peace
Corps They’ve been good to me 1 didn’t give as
much as I got."
Madeline Chorman. 65, of Charleston, w Va is
a good good example of the energy and resour-
cefulness of older Peace Corps volunteers Miss
Chorman, who taught business in Accra, Ghana,
recognized the need for a canteen at a local
hospital and set about to create one
"The waiting was awful for the people who
were lined up to see doctors at the hospital. Miss
Chorman recalls "There would be hundreds
waiting for treatment all day and the nearest
snack bar was 5 miles away"
After receiving permission by the hospital to
establish a canteen, Miss Chorman set about
raising funds Catholic Relief Services sent her
$1 000 as a start She returned to the United States
on leave and began baking cookies baby sitting
and waiting on tables at a country club — and
earned $400 more
At this point several inter faith groups took up
her cause Protestant, Catholic and Jewish
organizations banded together to give a benefit
dinner.
When I heard the tickets to passers by When I
returned to Ghana 1 had about $2,000 in donations
and wages earned, she says
THE CANTEEN DOORS opened three years ago
and "we’ve been busy ever since Miss Chorman
declares During her four years in Ghana, the
volunteer saw the canteen expand to twice its
original size and broaden its menu to the point
where it is a unique facility in Accra
A Ghanaian newspaper article noted, “The
service canteen is an-outstanding example of what
one dedicated and determined person can do once
a need is observed and acted upon "
The success of Miss Chorman’s project may
actually be related to her age Janet Klepper, 62.

By HELEN BOTTEL
Dear Helen:
While walking along a street in a semi-
commercial, semi-residential area, I
glanced up at a fourth floor window A
woman was leaning out, looking at the
shoppers below On the outside of the win-
dowsill were five flowerpots No guard rail
or barrier prevented them from crashing to
the street, if accidentally pushed
I know plants like sun, but apartment
dwellers should keep them away from open
windows or ledges. A direct hit could be
lethal. ■
Yes, I did something about this: I alerted
the manager of the store on the first floor so
that he could inform, the apartment oc-
cupant, or, if need be, the owner of the
building.— Eleanor ——

stoneware" at your home, and don’t
apologize Chances are they'll enjoy it
mightily
Dear Eleanor:
Thanks for the alert, and congratulations
on doing something positive about a
situation which needs changing Too many
people groan inwardly but never act. — H
Dear Helen:
When this woman entertains, everything
is absolutely perfect She serves food I've
only read about in gourmet articles Her
china is so fragile and expensive I’m afraid
to touch it She even serves water in crystal
goblets
Naturally, we re all afraid to invite her to
our houses Imagine what shed think of
lasagna on heavy stoneware, and super-
marketwine! —
I know she feels left out, as she’s had us
over several times already with no return
dinners from us She and her husband are
really fine people but, frankly, I’m not in her
league as a-hostess, nor are my friends
Do we just invite this couple to a fancy
restaurant, even though the bill would break
us? - Overpowered
Dear Overpow ered:
No! Invite this couple to "lasagna on
Each hostess has her own way of en
tertaining and she shouldn't feel intimidated
by "perfect" people (who, it the truth were
known, probably wonder why they aren't as
casually accepted as others in their crowd)
- 11
Dear Helen:
Please say something about women
shoppers 1 even saw a man do it who
unscrew salad dressing jar lids to smell the
product, then return the jars to the shelves
Think of the germs they spread Also mayo
spoils once it's opened — Astounded
Dear Astounded:
Duly said.
Shoppers inspect the eggs, thump the
melons, even squeeze the Charmin. but
don’t sniff the salad dressings That’s even
worse than grabbing a free handful ol
grapes to munch as you wheel around the
store — H
Dear Helen: .
Our daughter and son-in law and their two
young children are spending their vacation
with us Correction we’re baby sitting the
kids while their parents gallivant around
with former school friends They’re out all
day and most of the night The few times
they stay home, they’re sleeping in
What bothers me is that they think they ‘re
doing Us a favor giving Grandma and
Grandpa a chance to see the little ones And
they do this every year’
Ale we wrong to feel used’ Would it be
terrible for us to plan a three week cruise
during our-kids’ vacation time next year? —
Groaning Gramps
Dear Gramps
You’re wrong only in not telling your kids
you feel used When you announce that
three-week cruise next year, let them know
it s a vacation from grandparenting 11
