For ALS
Patients
. Since it claimed the life of
its most famous victim,
baseball Hall of Famer Lou
Gehrig, in 1939, little has
been learned about the
cause, cure or incidence of
amyotrophic lateral
sclerosis
in an effort to alter the
situation, the recently
" organized Amyotrophic
Lateral Sclerosis Society of
America has launched a
national search for ALS
patients in order to compile
statistics, share information
and spur research into the
mysteries of this crippling,
deadly disease
“Estimates on the number
of ALS victims annually in
America vary from 3,000 to
20,000."' says ALSSOA
president H Eames Bishop,
whose wife, paralyzed and
on life support systems, is an
ALS patient
ALS — which has also
claimed the lives of such
noted Americans as U.S.
vice president Henry
Wallace and world
heavyweight boxing
champion Ezzard Charles —
is a progressive paralytic
disease in which the motor
nerve cells of the nervous
system cease functioning
and sometimes die The ■
muscles supplied by such
nerve cells go out of control
and become paralyzed
No matter how severe and
extensive the paralysis,
there is no impairment of
intellect, nor of the senses
Few ALS patients survive
more than from three to five
years
"With no truly national
organization serving their
needs in past years," says
Bishop, "ALS patients and
their families have had to
cope with the frustration of a
'no hope' diagnosis unaided,
uninformed and
unorganized As one result,
research on the disease has
been uncoordinated, un
derfunded and practically
nonexistent
"If we are in generate the
sort of funding required to
whip ALS," says Bishop,
"We need to start developing
some accurate information
concerning its incidence in
America We would like to
bring ALS victims together
in their own cause and give
them something hopeful for
which to fight
