TWU uses grant in bilingual training
A new $99,949 federal grant to Texas Woman’s University An additional $40,000 federal grant supports eight fulltime
is being used to expand the training of teachers for classes
taught in both English and Spanish
Part of the funding goes to the Bilingual Education Centro
de Accion (BECA) program, which has received an ad-
ditional $43,240 from the Dallas Independent School District
The BECA program, begun by TWU in 1969, is a
cooperative effort by TWU and the Dallas schools Juniors
and seniors in the TWU College of Education commute to on-
the-job training in 50 Dallas public schools which take part in
the program
The federal grant also provides support for graduate level
training of bilingual teachers TWU will conduct in-service
— teacher training programs with six school districts —
Wichita Falls, McKinney, Denton, Carrollton-Farmer’s
Branch. Piano and Fort Worth
Rodolfo Rodriguez, administrator of the bilingual-
bicultural education program at TWU, described the grant as
part of a nationwide effort by the U.S. Office of Education to
train bilingual teachers
“Funds from this grant will be used to cover tuition and
fees of participating students,” be said. "Students in the
BECA program will receive a stipend in addition to their
tuition and fees " •

master’s degree in bilingual education.
“This program is designed to prepare supervisors for
teachers in bilingual programs All of the participants, most
— of whom are from Texas school districts, are expereinced
bilingual teachers," Rodriguez said.

1965 Texas, which passed supportive legislation in 1969, is
