HOUSTON (UPD Lynn Swann, Franco Harris and
quarterback Terry Bradshaw each scored one touchdown
and the opportunistic Pittsburgh Steelers capped a near •
season long comeback Saturday to earn an NFL playoff berth
with a 21-0 victory over the punchless Houston Oilers
Three games behind division leading Cincinnati five games
deep in the season. Pittsburgh won nine straight to keep alive
its chances for an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl
title
Bradshaw, who missed much of the nine-game streak be-
nause of two injuries, received only his third start since the
Steelers comeback began And he hit the big plays when he

The Strickland Vikings rolled to their seventh win of the
season Saturday night and won the Strickland Freshman
Invitational basketball tournament, by defeating McKinney
55-51 in the championship contest
The Congress Cougars won the third place trophy in the
tournament by defeating their B team
Don Beck, the most valuable player of the tournament, was
the big man in the attack for Strickland as he scored 21 points
and grabbed 12 rebounds in the championship game Milch
Bolivar had 12 points and Cletus Clark had nine points and 14
rebounds also for Strickland
Western Hills defeated Denison Hughes for the consolation
crown, 58-37 Strickland defeated Western Hills in the
opening round 68-59 as Clark had 18 points and 21 rebounds
while Bolivar had 15, Roger Grissom had 14 and Beck
finished with 1---—-----------—__
Congress topped the Strickland B team in the opening
round 64 51 and then lost to McKinney in the semifinals 62-44
Strickland beat the Congress B squad 66-34 in the other
semifinal game
Clark and Bolivar were both named to the all-tournament
team while James Harris and Johnny Holley of McKinney
and Bobby Anderson of Western Hills rounded out the team
Strickland gets back into district action Monday night
when they host Lewisville
just three times, but was thwarted on the last threat in the
fourth quarter when three passes fell incomplete
Pittsburgh took Houston’s punt at that point and moved 79
yards for another score, that coming on a one-y ard plunge by
Bradshaw .
Harris gained 104 yards and running mate Rocky Bleier
added 107 more to join Harris with a 1.000 yard plus rushing
total for the season
only once in NFL history, that being when Miami’s Mer-
cury Morris and Larry Csonka did it in 1972. have two backs
on the same team rushed for more than 1.000 yards each
Pittsburgh, 10-4. entered the game needing a victory to
ensure a playoff trip for the fifth straight year
: The win-elosed out any playoff hopes for the Cincinnati
Bengals and the Cleveland Browns, each of whom couid
finish 10-4 with wins on Sunday But, since Pittsburgh has a
better record in competition among those three teams it
captured the post-season berth
Despite the crucial nature of the game, Pittsburgh ap
peared flat in the first half and failed to capitalize when it
drove five times into Houston territory
It took cornerback’s Mel Blount interception and 28-yard
return late in the second quarter to wake up the Steelers
offense Two plays later. Swann caught the touchdown pass
Pittsburgh led just 740 midway through the third period
when Harris fumbled on a sweep at his own 35 During the
scramble for the ball Houston safety CL Whittington was
flagged for kicking the ball and Pittsburgh maintained -
possession 31 yards up the field

tying up the game with ten points each in the first quarter the
Ponies fell behind fit points in the second period to go in at
half-time with a 23-33 score
in the third period the Denton team just couldn t pu' the
reins on the Stallions as they just traded baskets with North
Mesquite to end the quarter with a score of 34 46
North Mesquite scored 23 points in the final period as their
running game was just loo strong for the lagging Ponies The :
Denton team scored 13 points in the fourth quarter but costly
