DONNIE DEVEREAUX STEVE MeNEILL
GORDON MeADAMS
1 hree Broncos honored
Voted on by their peers, three varsity
members were singled out for recognition
on the season past at the annual Denton
Bronco Football Awards Banquet this
week
Senior co-captain Steve McNeill was
voted the Offensive Player of the Year.
Junior co-captain Gordon McAdams the
Defensive Player of the Year, and senior
Donnie Devereaux the Most Valuable
For McNeill, McAdams and Devereaux,
it was a double achievement. First, they
were chosen to the 1976 6-4A All-District
team Second, they earned the respect and
- mutual admiration of their teammates in
winning the awards
McNeill was a solid, steady fullback that
got the tough yardage inside Although not
. that big (5-8, 180>, McNeill led the Broncos
in rushing with 623 yards (4.7 average),
seven touchdowns.
McNeill a yardage total would have been
even higher had he not missed one game
and part of another with a knee injury "I
was worried," he said. "I didn’t know if 1
could come back."
McAdams, from his middle linebacker
slot, led the team in tackles with 128.
Emblematic of his consistency, he was a
unanimous All District selection
"I had a good season," McAdams (6-0,
. 1951 said, “but it could have been a better
one." His best game, as he called it, was
the L. D. Bell contest played in the mud at
Bronco Stadium
The mud and rain makes a more ex-
citing.” he recounted McAdams had an
interception m Denton’s 10-9 victory
Next year will be a challenge for
McAdams "People will be looking up to
me. and a will pat more pressure on me."
he said
Tailback Devereaux (5-7, 160) was a
threat to go all the way every time he
touched the ball. Bronco head coach Bill
Shipman calls him "Mr Magic," and for
good reason
Among Devereaux’ seven touchdowns
were scoring jaunts of 42, 50 and 78 yards,
in addition he counted on a kb-yard pass
The fleet-footed MVP 44.5 ia 40-yard
dash) was limited to an eight-game
season Devereaux fractured a leg in the
Bell game, missing the second half and the
final two games as well
Nonetheless, he was a unanimous All-
District choice, and rushed for 542 yards
(7.3 average) Devereaux beat game was
against Wichita Falls High, gaining 153
yards on 13 carries
On the season, Devereaux said, f could
have done better I didn’t touch the ball
enough He averaged between 9-16
carries a game

Tyler in recent years has been a hotbed of football
recruiting success One only need look at Eari and Tim
Campbell at Texas and Ronnie Lee at Baytar among other
Tyler natives that have made it big in the Southwest Con-
ference
This year, moat of the college recruiters’ wishful thinking
centers on Bentonite Robert Evans of Tyler Junior College
Evans, a 6-2, 200-pound cornerback, has been contacted by
at least 20 schools wanting his services for the 1977 season
Evans has already visited the University of California at
Berkeley
Evans age - 22 — is an added advantage, in addition to his
size The sophomore at TJC graduated from Denton High in
1972, but injuries forced him to drop out of school in 1973 and
74 . . _________.
Last year proved to be the charm for Evans on his third
attempt at making the TJC team, which he did and has been
drawing rave notices ever since
Evans made all-conference m 1976 despite playing on a 46
team Texas A&M head coach Emory Bellard thought
enough of Evans to pay him a visit last week, to persuade him
in enrolling at Aggieland
Ron Meyer and has staff at SMI as also interested m Evans,
and is hopeful of landing him m their effort in rebuild the

There was, for example, the strange George
Scott affair.
Traded by Milwaukee along with cuheider
Bernie Carbo to Boston in exchange for first
baseman Cecil Cooper, Scott balked at the deal,
demanding that the Red Sox renegotiate his
contract He had already signed for in
The Sox were willing to renegotiate, but Scour’s
agent. Gary Walker, told them he would
recommend that the slugging first baseman
reject their final offer. At that point, it seemed
the deal would be voided. But then Scott ignored—
his agent’s advice and agreed to terms Does

FM SCOTT and Carbo, the trade meant a
return te Boston. Two other deals also restored
players to their former teams. Veteran
designated hitter Rico Carty returned to
Cleveland in a swap that sent catcher Rick
Cerone and utilityman John Lowenstein to the
expansion Toronto Blue Jays, and third baseman
Ken Reitz, traded from St. Louis to Sam Fran-
cisco at these meetings a year ago, returned to
the Cardinals in a deal that brought right-hander
Lynn McGlothen to the Giants.
