Kids march for new school
Taxpayers consider 1928 bond issue
(Editor's Note: The following
is a continued historical account
of the building of Cuero High
School in 1928 as researched
and compiled by Ada Kirk.)
On March 29, 1928, Superin-
tendent Melton raised these
questions, "How many towns in
Texas in Cuero’s class have any
school buildings that antedate
the old John C. French building?
How many towns in Texas have
a $35,000 high school build-
ing?" In the article following
figures were given of amounts
of bond issues in Edinburg, Mis-
sion, and other towns in Texas.
On March 30, 1928, the two
propositions: (1) The John C.
French school building ... is
unsafe and (2) The High School
building is safe but insufficient
and inadequate to present
demands were reiterated. The
writer urged the school suppor-
ters to remedy these two
propositions at the polls, Satur-
day April 7th and affirmed: ". .
.our faith in the wisdom of the
Cuero majority leads us to
believe they will settle it in the
right manner."
On April 3, 1928, Superinten-
dent Melton released the infor-
mation on questionnaires sent to
approximately forty schools in
Texas in the same class with
Cuero in respect to enrollment,
population, etc. Replies from
twenty towns showed that each
of these towns had voted school
bonds exceeding $100,000 since
1919. Cuero stands at the foot of
the list with an expenditure of
$35,000 in 1912.
School supporters, not taking
kindly to Cuero’s being at the
foot of the list, on April 4, 1928
staged a parade in connection
with the coming bond issue vot-
ing Saturday April 7th. The
headlines boasted SIX
HUNDRED IN SCHOOL
PARADE THIS AFTERNOON.
"Beating drums, flying banners,
and a throng of children of all
sizes and ages made a stirring
appeal for more and better
schools for Cuero," the writer
stated and continued, "The
parade was made in an effort to
turn any unfavorable opinion in
favor of the bond issue to be
voted on Saturday." "Wake up
Rip Van Winkle and Vote for
the Bond Issue" was one of the
pertinent banners displayed as
the students bore down on the
business district. Reaching the
city park, the students grouped
together and gave appropriate
‘yells.’ They were accompanied
by Superintendent Melton and
the entire faculty from the two
schools, classes being dismissed
so that all students might par-
ticipate in the parade.”
Even though the proponents
of the bond issue were aware of
the impact of the parade, they
took nothing for granted. Just
two days after this event April 5,
1928 The Record reiterated:
Saturday,, April 7 is the date
when the school bond issue of
$125,000 to erect, equip and
repair school buildings and to
purchase necessary sites for
such is to be voted on. This elec-
tion will be held at the DeWitt
County Courthouse and was or-
dered on March 13th.
This story is being published
to heighten community aware-
ness of the effort underway by
Oscar Scott Memorial Founda-
tion to renovate the 1928 school
building to a community center
and multi-purpose education
facility. Donations for the
project are being accepted at
Victoria Bank and Trust-Cuero
or by calling Sherre Ernster at
