Finley.
: According to Finley the offense
looked to be in good shape. The
layers were put in many situations
and reacted well. He adds that both
quarterbacks, Clint Finley and John
Henry Post, did an excellent job of
reading the defenses and finding
their weaknesses. Coach Finley
notes, "We averaged eight yards a
snap." This type of offensive con- *
trol will put the Gobblers in posi- ‘
tion to win ballgames.
: Coach Finley feels the coaching h
staff found room for improvements 1
bn the defensive side of the ball. 1
"The players knew where to go but 1
we need to work on technique," ex- 1
;plains Finley. 1
? The coaches feel the team is |
where it shoulu be at this time of 1
the year. However Finley states |
they will be looking for big im- |
yards on the night. Finley adds,
"The whole running game was set
up by blocking. The offensive line
fired off the ball and made some
good holes. The backs and
receivers also did a good job of
blocking for each other."
Coach Finley was also glad to
see as many fans at the scrimmage
as he did. Finley ends by stating,
"The players are showing en-
thusiasm and it’s going to be a treat
to watch them play.” Season tickets
are still available at the Administra-
tion Office from 8:00 a.m. till noon
weekdays.
The Central DeWitt Game
Management Association plans to
conduct its most extensive survey,
prior to the opening of deer season,
in order to scientifically estimate
how many deer are on the 25,000
acres included in the 47 member
cooperative. This will probably
result in the most accurate deer
census ever made in the county.
Charlie Weldon, president of the
association, urges all members to
be present at next Tuesday’s meet-
ing on August 31 and if possible
bring a friend. The annual business
meeting will follow a stew supper
which begins at 7:00 p.m at the
Friar Ag. Center in Cuero.
The first order of business will
be organizing teams of 4 or 5 to set
up spotlight survey lines and indi-
cate them on a county map.
Anyone not a member is en-
couraged to come and join an exist-
ing team, or form a new one, to
make the survey more complete.
This information, added to casual
observation data, will yield ac-
curate deer density data as well as
the buck/doe ratio and fawn sur-
vival rate in the surveyed area.
Other items of business will in-
clude the election of three new
directors, plans for acquiring gate
signs for participating members,
and paying next year’s $10 annual
dues.
In making a plea for new mem-
bers, Weldon stated that, "Wildlife
co-ops are not a fad; they are a
necessity if we are to successfully
manage our future game population
in the face of adverse weather,
predators, irresponsible hunters,
and anti-hunters. Effective game
management never ends. It is a
continuous process that not only
adapts to our present situation, but
helps form a better future.”

Rotary Club meeting talking about
this year’s Gobblers.
Now in his second year as head
football coach, Finley reported that
there are around 230 young men in
the football program from seventh
grade through 12th.
That would include about 105 in
the high school with about 28 of
that amount on the varsity squad.
The junior varsity and freshmen
squads have between 40 and 45 on
their rosters.
Looking ahead to this season,
Coach Finley said the pre-district
games will be a real test for the
Gobblers since they are playing
some state-ranked teams. First on
the schedule will be Columbus
which is ranked 12th or 13th in
state followed by Rockport which
is ranked sixth.
Next will be LaGrange which

pre-conference game will be
against Edna, "which is always a
tough game," he noted.
Looking back on his first year in
Cuero, the Gobblers opened their
season last year by defeating some
of the best teams in the area and
winning four of their first five
games. But the remainder of the
schedule was not as successful.
"We had to dismiss several kids
last year for disciplinary reasons,"
he said noting the team to recruit
several junior varsity and freshmen
players to complete the season.
"They had to grow up in a hurry,"
he said.
Since that time, "These kids have
really bounced back. This com-
munity will have a lot of pride in
these kids. They will play with a lot
of class," he said.
With the close of last season, the
Gobblers began an agility and
weight-training scheduled that
lasted through the summer. What
the athletes call the "House of
Pain," has resulted in an average
weight gain of 22 pounds per var-
sity player. Finley noted that in-
crease in weight was in muscle and
strength.
"In overall quickness we can
match anyone in district," he said.
"We are a lot more balanced team
this year and we will run the ball
effectively." -
Because of the many changes be-
tween last year and this season,
several of the athletes have been
moved to new positions. Last
year’s quarterback Chris Mathis
has been moved to wide receiver
and last year’s fullback Clint Finley
is the new quarterback.
Other areas to watch include the
speed of the wide-outs and the of-
fensive line. While the defensive
line is not real big, they are real
quick according to Finley.
One area that may surprise some
of Cuero’s opponents will be the
kicking game. "We will win some
games with our kicking game," he
said. The team’s top punter and
field goal kicker will be senior
Rome McNary with the help of
sophomore Finley. Coach Finley
noted that McNary has been very
successful on field goals from 40 to
45 yards out.
The squad’s first game will be on
Sept. 3 against Columbus at Gob-
bler Stadium starting at 8 p.m.
The Cuero High School football
teams will be travelling to Flores-
ville this Friday for a scrimmage.
The Freshman team will take the
feild at 5.00 p.m. with J.V. follow-
ing at 6:00. The Varsity Gobblers
will begin play at 7:30 p.m.
Coach Mickey Finley states that
the upcoming scrimmage is just
another chance for the teams to
practice. "Our main focus at this
point is Columbus," comments Fin-
ley.
However Finley adds, "1 am
somewhat concerned with Flores-
ville’s size and potential injuries."
Floresville has two lineman that
weigh in at over 300 pounds.
The Floresville Tigers also have
an offensive threat in runningback
Epi Lopez who rushed for 1,692
yards last fall.
