Cuero High School talk
of the town in 1928
(Editor's Note: The following
is a continued historical account
of the building of Cuero High
School in 1928 as researched
and compiled by Ada Kirk.)
The publicity, powers of per-
suasion, and projections for vic-
tory of the bond issue were
framed in the front-page picture
of the Friday, April 6, 1928
issue of The Record. From the
editorial "Town Talk" on the left
side sweeping across to the right
side headlines: RECORD VOTE
EXPECTED SATURDAY AS
OPPOSITION COME OUT IN
THE OPEN, all auention was
thrust on the election. The ban-
ner headline: BOND ELEC-
TION HOLDS PUBLIC IN-
TEREST was no small ap-
praisal. The reader’s attention
was instantly riveted to the cen-
tered photograph of the two-
storied John C. French out-dated
structure with its lofty bell tower
and ponderous doors and win-
dows and amused by the cap-
tion: It Was Good For Paul and
Silas. Tongue in check, the
writer scolded. "But when Paul
and Silas were boys, the John C.
French school building pictured
above was practically new. In
I hat day there were no
automobiles, no picture shows,
no paved streets, few electric
ights. Is it good enough for your
Children today? Go to the polls
Saturday and cast your vote for
better schools and the progress
of the town.”
: The editor and owner, J.C.
Howerton, in his editorial
column, "Town Talk" pleaded,
’Every effort has been put forth
l y the members of the school
board. The Cuero Record and
others, who have championed
tie cause of better and more
suitable schools." He berated
opponents who cited increased
taxes as the great bug-bear of
"near-sighted" citizens. In clos-
ing, he stated, "We elect our
school board members.... They
serve without compensation and
purely for the interest and affec-
ton they feel for their com-
munity. When we elect them to
their offices, we thereby give
them a vote of confidence, and
trust in their good judgment and
common sense to administer the
affairs wisely and to the best of
their ability."
In a short article, "Election In-
formation" the writer informed
voters, "There will be but one
voting box for the school bond
election first floor east side of
the DeWitt County Courthouse.
The polls will open at 8 a.m. and
close at 7 p.m. A school trustee
election will also be held Satur-
day. The voting box for this
election will be located at the
city hall and the same hours will
be observed."
"Who Can Vote in Election?"
was answered by C.F. Harris,
city attorney of Cuero. He
declared, "....any voter who is
otherwise qualified to vote and
who actually owned property
(real or personal) subject to
taxation in the district on the
first day of January is entitled to
vote." Following this article was
a forthright commentary: The
Schools Need Your Vote. The
writer admonished, "With every
indication that there is to be
strong opposition against the
voting of the bond issue... it be-
comes necessary that every sup-
porter of the schools visit the
polls tomorrow and cast his or
her ballot for the bond issue."
