nothing in scenery could be more
magnificent, I suddenly am ex-
posed to another unforgettable
sight.
Such was the case late this fall in
Colorado. I’d been to that beautiful
state several times, but never when
the aspen trees were in their full
splendor. Glorious to see.
Shimmering
golden yellow aspen enveloped the
area around Breckenridge and
Hoosier Pass. As far as the eye
could see were glimmering aspens.
Such graceful trees. Their clusters
of leaves swayed to and fro in the
breeze. They resemble translucent
yellow chimes. Aspens literally
covered mountain sides and the
right of way along the highways.
In this area, I always enjoy
watching buffalo graze, especial-
lywhen there are baby buffalo in
the herd. Talk about big teddy
bears. So cuddly looking. Buffalo
still seem rare to me and I almost
expect John Wayne or Kevin
Costner lo come riding out of the
sunset.
This year we were fortunate lo
sight two herds of big-horned sheep
about half way up a mountain.
They stood poised high on a rocky
ledge. Majestic adult males stood
watch as the young sheep pranced
around. How arrogant and proud-
looking they are!Our group visited
a renovated mining town in Fair
Play, altitude 8,000 feet. Interested
historical groups moved mining
cabins, alivery stable, railroad sta-
tion, general store, dentist of-
the huge hollowed out logs that
served as pipes for water. Black-
smith shop had different wagons,
carriages and sleds on display.
After our lour of the town we ,
congressmen. Let them know how
you feel! Seems if four living presi-
dents, a Nobel economist and two
former Secretaries of State endorse
the treaty, it should be good for us
in the long run. We need a united
front to compete in the European
market and the Pacific Rim market.

IT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROGRAM TO ENCOURAGE ENERGY CONSERVATION & NEIGHBORHOOD PRESERVATION
climbed (in a Cherokee) up the side 1
of a mountain to 14,000 feet. Ice |
and patches of snow were I
everywhere. We were high above |
the timber line, on the roof of the |
world. Fortunately we were dressed |
for our Alpine picnic. Although the I
view was spectacular, we didn’t |
tarry long. Too cold!We spent al- 1
most a full day at the beautiful |
Denver Botannical Gardens. What |
a pleasure. Gardens are spread out |
over several acres and the rain |
forest is particularly interesting. |
Denver weather cooperated with 1
us. Temps were cool in the morn- 1
ing and evening but about 70 to 75 1
degrees during the day. Flowers
were still blooming everywhere and
we enjoyed touring the downtown
area with all of its outdoor cafes.
We were impressed with the Den-
ver Center of Performing Arts
(second only to the Kennedy Cen-
ter in New York).
Because of its many conven-
tions, Denver has recreational
facilities downtown. Mile High
Stadium looms high over the
downtown area.
The new Coors Baseball Stadium
is nearing completion. Denver has
gone crazy over their National
League baseball team, the
Rockies.4.4 million fans have at-
tended the games. An unheard of
record. On opening day, elegant
programs (collectors’ items) were
printed and 80,227 fans cheered for
the Rockies as the game got under-
way.
Andres Galarraga is the darling
of the Rockies and the toast of the
town. Never before in the history of
baseball has an expansion team had
the National League Batting Cham-
pion, but Andres connected with a
.373 batting average with 502 ap-
pearances at bat. Fans went wild!!!
So on a happy note we said
good-bye to Denver. On to Seattle
• and Vancouver.
