INFERNAL MACHINE FOUND.
Attempt to Wreck Court House at
Lawton is Frustrated.
Lawton, Okla., Oct. 26.—An attempt
to carry out the threats sgslnst Coun-
ty Attorney J. A. Fain contained In an
anonymous letter two weeks ago—an
attempt which failed of its purpose-
was discovered yesterday morning
when F. B. Swank, deputy county at-
torney, entered the office of Mr. Fain
on the third floor of the Keegan build-
ing, opening the door, to which was
attached the string designed to Are the
death trap. A large artillery sharpnell
copper shell, containing dynamite and
something near a quart of loose ex-
plosive, so arranged in n small wooden
box that a match and fuse and cap.
Ignited by the pulling of a string at-
tached to the door knob would explode
it, waa lying in a chair near the door.
The match had ignited and had burn-
ed some loose cotton by which it was
surrounded, but paper. In which the
outside box was wrapped, so effectively
excluded the air that th eflame went
out before the two-inch fuse caught
fire.
The death engine had been placed
in the room aome time during the night
before, evidently with the hope that
Mr. Fain would be caught in the ex-
plosion.
For some time pest he has been the
first to the office, arriving during the
court term, usually about sunrise. This
morning he waa late.
Had the explosion occurred, expert
dynamiters declare, it would have torn
out the whole front end of the three
