By Cardinal Gibbons.
As an evidence of the righteousness
of America's cause in the war, 1
would point to the patience of our
President and congress under the
long series of grave injuries and
broken pledgee endured by the United
State* during the time that Germany
was professing its friendship for us.
We were shocked to see our property
unjustly destroyed in vast quantity,
but what wa* immeasurably more se-
rieus, to read of our men, women, and
children killed in violation of the uni-
versally accepted custom* of the sea.
When at length not only American
etizens but neutrals everywhere soft,
fered appallingly under the cruelties
of a nation which hesitated not to dis-
regard international law we learned
that patience wa* being construed as
cowardice, and that it was folly to
hope that wiser counsels would pre-
vail among our enemies to bring
about a change in their lawless policy.
Then we took the only course open
to us, ths defense of our sovereign
rights se a nation and the upholding
of the ideals of truth and justice in
the hearts of all peoples. We'have
entered into ths struggle with a clean
conscience, seeking no territorial or
financial gain, but the peace of the
world, the liberty of its people, and
the security of all nations.

Christian training, both in the home
and in the schools. The Baptist
churches of this district pledged $3000

An extract from a letter under date of Jan. 14, 1918:
“It sounds pretty but does little good to tell a fellow how.
T, natural he looks when he’s dead, so allow me to tell you
A how much I appreciate the brand of coffee you are putting
out. It touches the spot with every cup and takes away
the sting of the thought of coming prohibition. It’s as
