WASHING COMPOUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,409, dated May 29, 1888.

Be it hnowni that we, JORDAN C. DAVIS
EPAINONDIS P. DAVISr, and DAVID W. DA-
Vis, citizens of the United States, residing at
5 Moont Calm, in the county of Limestone and
State ofTexas, have invented certain new and
useful Improvements i n a Composition of Mat-
ter to be Used as a Washing Compound or
Detergent; and we do hereby declare the fol-
to lowing to be a full, clear, and exact descrip-
tion of the invention, such as willenable others
skilled in the art to which it appertains to-
make and use the same.
Our invention relates to detergent or wash-
15 ing compounds for cleansing clothing, fabrics,
&c., and the ingredients required to produce
the new composition, and the mode of manu.
facturing the same, are hereinafter more par-
ticularly set forth.
o We take of pure water, one (1) gallon; whilt
rock potash, one (1) pound; borax, one-quarter
(4) pound; kerosene-oil, four (4) ounces; ben-
zine, one-half (4) ounce. These ingredients
are to be thoroughly mingled, as follows:
25 Place the potash and borax in one gallon of
water and boil until entirely dissolved. Then
add the benzine and kerosene-oil in quantity
as above stated, and again boil slowly until
all the ingredients are well mixed and thor-
30 oughly incorporated, when the compound is
allowed to cool, and should be bottled for fu-
ture use. We prefer to use either the Babbitt
or Victory brands of-potash.
The directions for using our detergent com-
35 pound are as follows: The clothing or fabricsto be cleansed should be wet thoroughly with
cold water, after which the surplus water
should beremoved by wringingand thefabrics
placed in a tub of hot soapsuds to which has
been added one-half (4) pint of the compound 40
or detergent to each three (3) gallons of soap-
suds, and the fabrics are allowed tolremain in
this mixture fifteen or twenty minutes, after
which they are to be removed and replaced in
a similar mixture of soapsuds and the deter- j4
gent compound, and boiled therein ten or
twenty minutes more, then removed and

elements foreign to our composition, namely:
skim-milk, sweet-oil, beef-tallow, magnesia,
spirits turpentine, alcohol, and spirits of am- 55
monia.
We claim as our invention-
A detergent or cleansing compound com-
posed of kerosene-oil, benzine, borax, white
rock potash, and-water, mixed, compounded, 60
and applied in manner and proportions sub-
stantially as hereinbefore specified.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures
in presence of two witnesses.
