UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM ALEXANDER MOORE, OF SHERMAN, TEXAS.
PRESSURE DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,044, dated August 28, 18E3.
Application filed May 19, 1883. (No model.)To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. MooRE, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident at
Sherman, in the county of Grayson and State of
5 Texas, have invented certain new and useful
Improvements in Pressure Devices; and I do
declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact
description of the invention, such as will enable
others skilled in the art to which it appertains
io to make and use the same, reference being had
to the accompanying drawings, and to letters
or figures of reference marked thereon, which
form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation
15 of this invention, and shows a front view of
the device inside of a half-barrel, shown in
section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view. Figs. 3,
4, 5, 6, and 7 are detail views of the different
parts.
20 Thisinvention hasrelationto portablepress-
nre devices for use in casks, boxes, barrels, or
other receptacles; and the invention consists
in the construction and novel arrangement of
the pointed dogs and cam-levers pivoted to-
25 gether, and in the combination therewith of a
pivot-bolt having its nut secured by means of
a locking-key, all as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters
a and b designate two dogs, having pointed
30 outer ends, v, and being connected together
by a pivot-bolt, c, at their lower ends. This
pivot-bolt also connects the cam-levers d and
e, the bolt passing through said levers near
their convex edges g. In order that the bolt
35 shall remain securely in position, notwith-
standing the working of the cam-levers and
dogs, it is arranged with a locking-key,, h,
which engages the bolt and nut k. The bolt c
is formed with a longitudinal groove or key-
40 seat, 1, of such depth that the wire or key h,
when placed in the groove, will not inter-
fere with the thread of the nut when the lat-ter is turned on the bolt. The nut is also
grooved transversely in its face, as indicated
at m, in order that the wire or key may be 45
drawn into the groove, and thereby lock the
nut on the bolt.
The pressure device is operated by adjust-
ing the pointed ends v of the dogs outward, so
that they will engage the side walls of the box 50
or barrel or other receptacle containing the
material to be -put under pressure. The cam-
levers, which are pivoted to the dogs, are at
first arranged in horizontal or nearly horizon-
tal position. In order to apply the pressure 55
on the follower f, the handles of the cam-le-
vers are raised and brought toward each other,
so that through the purchase obtained by the
dogs the cam-edges g of the levers are brought
to bear, forcing the follower downward. 60
This pressure device is designed to serve
various useful purposes in connection with
barrels, boxes, and other common receptacles,
as it enables articles placed therein to be
packed in small space or held down under 65
brine or other liquid.
Having described this invention, what I
claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
is-
1. Apressure device consisting of the point- 70
ed dogs a b and the cam-levers d and e, piv-
oted together, and adapted to be used inside
of a barrel or other receptacle, substantially as
specified.
2. The combination, with the pointed dogs 75
a b and the cam-levers d e, of the grooved
bolt c, grooved nut 7c, and the key or locking-
wire h, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature
in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAI ALEXANDER, MOORE.
