New Optic
System Installed
Jerry West, Operations
Manager for GTE Southwest
Incorporated in Memphis,
Texas, announced today the
completion of the first major
fiber optic cable placement
in the Panhandle of Texas.
The project which began in
April of 1987 completed in
the first of December 1987,
and involved the placement
of over 90 miles of fiber optic
cable.
The Panhandle areas of
Memphis, Clarendon,
Groom and Panhandle were
selected for the advanced
Snow
miss two days of classes.
Principal Kenneth Sweatt
said the two days will have
to be made up. The first day
will be made up on March 2,
the last day of the ski
holiday. The second day
missed will be taken off the
Easter holiday and made up
on April 5.
Department of public
Safety officers were also
kept busy assisting stranded
travelers. There were no
accidents reported during
the worst of the strom but
Officer Gary Davis investi-
gated two accidents on
Monday as traffic on the
Interstate resumed. There
were no injuries reported in
either accident.
Local motel operators re-
ported their rooms filled to
capacity with the over flow
of those stranded finding
lodging at the First Baptist
Church.

fiber optic cable placement
due to local service needs.
The cable was placed along
Highway 256 from Memphis
to Clarendon, along High-
way 70 from Clarendon to
Interstate 40, then over to
Groom and Panhandle, mak-
ing this one of the longest
fiber optic routes in Texas.
“Fiber optics is helping us
answer some of-the
customers’ requests for ex-
panded communication ser-
vices while maintaining our
position as a low cost pro-
vider of quality service,”
West stated. “The optical
fiber can carry over two
thousand telephone calls,
data messages, graphic
materials and television
pictures, meeting a variety
of new and emerging de-
mands from both our bus-
iness and . residential
customers. In fiber optics,
normal speech signals are
changed into light pulses
and then sent through the
fiber. “A single fiber optic

cable measures about one-
thoughsandth of an inch in
diameter, which is about the
thickness of the human
hair.” Four of these hair-like
cable wires will be running
through our underground
system. “These hair-like
fibers, could if you wanted
to, send a complete set of
encyclopedia context, in
seconds,” he added.
“Another major improve-
ment with fiber optics cable
is that, unlike metal cable, it
is less likely to be adversely
affected by lightning or
noise on the line, and
provides the customer with a
higher level of privacy.”
West concluded, “Not
only are we proud about the
improving of service, but we
are pleased with the level of
both voice and data trans-
missions with use of fiber
optics and hope this brings
our customers a greater
level of service.

With homogenized Sup-R-Lix® there’s no waste.
Its high-level nutrition stays put, so cows get the full
body-conditioning benefits of the ration every time
they lick the wheel. In feed trials, spring-calving cows
on Sup-R-Lix Breeder 32 weighed an average of 54
lbs. more after calving than cows on a conventional
32% liquid supplement, yet feed consumption was
virtually the same. Sup-R-Lix is the one liquid ration
you can count on to match the performance of highest
quality dry supplements—yet still give you self-feed-
ing convenience and labor savings.
