UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE CUSTER, OF WHITNEY, TEXAS.
FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,487, dated March 18, 1884.
Application filed November 2, 1883. (No model.)[o all whom, it mnay concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE CUSTER, a citi-
zen of the United States, and a resident of
Whitney, in the county of Hill and State of
5 Texas, have invented certain new and useful
Improvements in Files; and I do hereby de-
clare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, which will
enable others skilled in the art to which it
To appertains to make and use the same, refer-
ence being had to the accompanying drawings,
which form a part of this specification, and in
which-
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved file.
15 Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is
an edge view of the edge opposite to that shown
in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of
the file.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre-
20 spending parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to files; and it
consists in the improved construction of the
same, as will be hereinafter more fully de-
scribed and claimed.
25 In the accompanying drawings, A repre-
sents the file proper. The teeth upon the sides
of my improved file are cut in such a manner
that they extend only half-way across the width
of the file, the inner ends of the teeth meeting
30 at an angle at the center of the width of the
blade. By this arrangement of the teeth the
file is made a self-cleaner-that is to say, it
clears itself of its own dust or chips. One
edge of the file (that edge shown in Fig. 3) is
35 provided with a series of ordinary straight
cuts or teeth, while the other edge is prefer-
ably made somewhat rounded, and providedwith a series of longitudinal cuts or teeth, as
shown in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing description, taken in 40
connection with the accompanying drawings,
the construction of my improved file will read-
ily be understood without requiring further
explanation. By constructing the file-blade
with the longitudinal teeth on its, edges the 45
operator can use the file for fine work, &c.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim
and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the
United States-
1. A file provided with longitudinal teeth 50
upon one or both of its edges, as described.
2. A file having the teeth upon its sides so
cut that they extend only half-way across the
width of the file, the inner ends of the said
teeth meeting at an angle at the center of the 55
width of the blade, as and for the purpose
shown and set forth.
3. A file provided with longitudinal teeth
upon one or both of its edges, and having the
teeth upon its sides so cut that they extend 60
only half-way across the width of the file, the
inner ends of the said teeth meeting at an an-
gle at the center of the width of the blade,
constructed and arranged to operate substan-
tially in the manner and for the purpose shown 65
and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as
my own I have hereunto affixed my signature
in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE CUSTER.
