UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT ENGLISH, OF AUSTIN, TEXAS.
OIL-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,977, dated May 6, 1884.
Application filed January 30, 1884. (No model.)To all whom it manCy concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT ENGLISH, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Aus-
tin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas,
5 have invented a new and useful Oil-Can, of
which the following is a specification, refer-
ence being had to the accompanying draw-
ings.
My invention relates to an improvement in
io oil cans or fillers, and more particularly to
that class which are employed to distribute
the oil upon machinery; and it has for its ob-
ject to provide a can of improved construc-
tion, whereby the liability of foreign matterin
15 the oil will be prevented from cloggingthees-
cape-tube, and thus rendering the flow of oil
impossible until the spout of the same has
been freed from such obstruction.
With these ends in view the invention con-
20 sists in the combination, with the spout of an
oil-can, of a perforated tube connected to the
end thereof.
The invention further consists in the im-
proved construction and combinations of parts
25 hereinafter fully described, and pointed outin
the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sec-
tion of an oil-can having my improvement
applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view
30 of the spout detached, showing the applica-
tion of my improvement to the same.
In the accompanying drawings, in which
like letters refer to corresponding parts
throughout the several figures, A represents
35 an oil-can, which is of the ordinary construc-
tion, and provided with the usual screw-
threaded mouth or opening, a.
B represents the spout, which is provided
near its lower end, and upon the portion situ-
40 ated within the can A, with a series of open-
ings, and at its lower end with a plug, d.
Upon the tube or spout B is a screw-cap, b,which is adapted to engage with the interiorly-
screw-threaded mouth of the can. As the
tube B is tapering, the cap b is slid there- 45
on, and forced downwardly upon the enlarged
portion of the same, thus securely wedging the
cap upon the spout. The lower or underside
of the screw-threaded cap is closed tightly
around the tube C, so that the only communi- 50
cation that the oil could have would be by
passing first through said tube C, which strains
the oil and prevents any foreign matter from
entering the oil-tube and interfering with the
proper flow of oil when in use. The lower end 55
of this tube C is closed by means of a stopper,
d, which fits tightly within the said tube.
It will be seen from the above description,
taken in connection with the annexed draw-
ings, that my iniprovement is very simple, is 6o
readily applied, and thoroughly prevents any
foreign matter from entering the oil- tube;
and, further, that it may be manufactured and
supplied at a slight cost. It will also be seen
that my improvement may be applied to cans 65
containing kerosene, &c.
Having fully described my invention, what
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-
ters Patent, is-
The combination, with the can A, having a 70
screw-threaded opening, of a spout provided
upon its sides within the can A with a series of
openings, and provided at its lower end with
a plug, d, and an exteriorly-screw-threaded
cap rigidly mounted on saidspout, and adapt- 75
ed to engage the screw-threaded mouth of the
can A, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as
my own I have hereto affixed my signature in
presence of two witnesses.
